Under the direction of Matthew Fang, orchestras at Esperanza High School have consistently earned top honors at district and regional festivals. Each year students participate in the SCSBOA festival and the high school orchestra festival hosted by the Philharmonic Society of Orange County, with performance opportunities on stages such as the Renee and Henry Segerstrom Hall and the Musco Center for the Arts. Every year orchestras students are also seen representing Esperanza HS at local communities programs such as the John Wayne High School Holiday Music Concert, Disney's Imagination Campus, and Knott's Berry Farm's performance in the Park.
The orchestra program provides students a well rounded education where they are challenged to learn a string instrument in a supportive environment. Moreover, orchestra is a great way to fulfill A-G college credit requirement for admission to UC and CSU. The program includes three performing ensembles: String Orchestra, Sinfonia, and Concert Orchestra.

Students who wish to be placed in Sinfonia will need to email an audition video to Mr. Fang (mfang@pylusd.org) by March 20th of each year. The video needs to be under 1 minute long and demonstrate your ability to do vibrato, shift, and play beyond first position. Students can choose a piece of their own choosing for the audition. (it can be either a solo piece or an orchestra piece from school)
Fundamental techniques (vibrato and shifting) that students are asked to demonstrate for their audition into Sinfonia are techniques that will be taught and built upon in String Orchestra.
Students who wish to be in orchestra but do not want to audition will be placed in String Orchestra.

String Orchestra is the foundational level orchestra for all orchestra students. Students also have the option to audition for Sinfonia in the beginning of each school year.
String Orchestra studies music literature from the baroque, classic, renaissance, romantic and modern periods. Basic string playing practices such as vibrato and shifting are reviewed in this class and built upon. During the learning process, students will discover the historical concepts for various styles and periods of orchestra music.
Students from Sinfonia and String Orchestra will rehearse together as Concert Orchestra. All students from Sinfonia and String Orchestra are required to be part of Concert Orchestra. Guest clinicians and conductors will be used throughout the course to extend the students’ knowledge of instrument skills and music literature as well as develop an awareness of the various facets of the music profession. Performances as Concert Orchestra includes Performance in the Parks at Knott's, Disney's imagination campus workshops at Disney, and Philharmonic Society of Orange County's High School Orchestra festival performance at the Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall.
