The Dual Language Academy (DLA)
The Dual Language Academy (DLA) at the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District is an enriching educational model where native English and native Spanish speaking students come together to learn to speak, read, write, and communicate in two languages: English and Spanish.
Esperanza High School's Spanish Department is dedicated to helping students develop strong language proficiency and cultural understanding. Our experienced teachers, many of whom are native speakers and/or have studied and worked abroad, provide students with a solid foundation in Spanish while enriching learning through authentic cultural and global perspectives. We offer a comprehensive sequence of courses designed to support students at all proficiency levels, while also serving as the home of the Dual Language Academy (DLA) at the high school level. DLA students continue developing and maintaining their bilingual skills as they work toward earning the California State Seal of Biliteracy through an advanced course pathway. Course offerings include:
Spanish 1 (Novice)
Spanish 2 (Low Intermediate–Intermediate)
Spanish 2 Honors (Intermediate)
Spanish 3 (High Intermediate)
Spanish 3 Honors (High Intermediate–Low Advanced)
Spanish Native Speakers 3 Honors (Advanced–Superior)
AP Spanish Language & Culture (Advanced–Superior)
AP Spanish Literature (Advanced–Superior)
Chicano Studies (Dual Enrollment Course)
Through these courses, students strengthen their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills while gaining valuable cultural knowledge and preparing for success in college, careers, and an increasingly multilingual world.
