Using Your Employer as a Clinical Site
If you work in a setting that is appropriate for your clinical courses, your current employer may be a great option for your clinical rotations.
To prevent any potential conflict of interest, you may only use your place of employment as your clinical site if all of the following conditions are met:
All clinical hours are performed outside of your assigned work hours
The clinical activities are different than your existing work duties
The clinical activities are not under the supervision of your work manager
Your manager or direct coworkers are not serving as your preceptor
⚠️ There will be no exceptions to these requirements.
Example: It would be acceptable to complete the clinical hours in a different department than where you work and to have a preceptor who is a qualified practitioner with no direct or indirect role in evaluating your performance as an employee.
Can My Preceptor Work At My Employer?
Only if they:
Are in a different department
Are not your supervisor
Do not share job responsibilities with you
Supervise clinical hours outside of your work schedule
What is Not Allowed?
Performing clinical hours during your paid work shifts
Being supervised by your manager or a coworker
Having overlapping duties between your job and clinical role
Using a friend or family member (including those by marriage) as your preceptor
Nurse Practitioner students: See Additional Site and Preceptor Policies
NP students, see the Site & Preceptor Arrangements page for additional policies, including the repeat preceptor policy (e.g. how many times you may use a single preceptor during your program) and more.
Reminders
You must carefully delineate your student and employee roles
Misrepresenting your clinical role can result in disciplinary action under the Code of Student Conduct.
