Élise Forthomme

Bonjour, je m’appelle Élise Forthomme, j’ai 17 ans et je suis élève en dernière année à Champion. En novembre, je suis partie aux Pays-Bas pendant quatre semaines dans le cadre d’un échange scolaire.

J’ai été logée dans une famille d’accueil, celle de ma correspondante Jessica, qui a 16 ans. Tout s’est vraiment très bien passé. On parlait principalement néerlandais, mais il nous arrivait aussi d’échanger en anglais. Jessica et moi nous entendions super bien. Comme nous avions à peu près le même âge, nous partagions beaucoup de centres d’intérêt.

Le système scolaire là-bas était assez semblable à celui de la Belgique, mais j’ai tout de même remarqué quelques différences. Par exemple, les élèves ont des heures de fourche intégrées à leur horaire pour pouvoir étudier ou avancer dans leurs devoirs, alors que chez nous, ce genre de pause n’existe que si un professeur est absent. J’ai aussi trouvé que les cours de langues étaient plus poussés car les professeurs parlent uniquement dans la langue qu’ils enseignent. En cours d’anglais, par exemple, tout se fait en anglais.

Cet échange m’a permis de gagner en aisance quand je m’exprime dans une langue étrangère. J’ai appris du nouveau vocabulaire et surtout, j’ai commencé à retenir des tournures de phrases plus naturelles. Je remarque aussi que je vais plus facilement vers les autres, ce que je faisais moins avant.

Les gens là-bas étaient très accueillants. Même s’ils entendaient mon accent, ils venaient spontanément me parler pour m’aider à m’exercer. J’ai trouvé ça très bienveillant de leur part : ils voulaient sincèrement m’aider à progresser.

À quelqu’un qui envisage de partir en échange à l’étranger, je dirais de ne surtout pas hésiter à aller vers les autres. C’est vraiment en osant parler qu’on progresse. Le but est de s’immerger dans une nouvelle culture, donc il ne faut pas rester dans son coin. Il faut échanger, découvrir, et profiter à fond de l’expérience.

Hello, my name is Élise Forthomme, I’m 17 years old and currently in my final year at school in Champion. In November, I went on a four-week exchange to the Netherlands.

I stayed with a host family, the family of my exchange partner Jessica, who is 16. Everything went really well. We mostly spoke Dutch, but sometimes we would switch to English too. Jessica and I got along really well. Since we were around the same age, we had a lot of shared interests.

The school system over there was quite similar to what we have in Belgium, but I did notice a few differences. For example, students have free periods built into their schedule to study or work on assignments, while in Belgium, we only have those when a teacher is absent. I also found that language classes were more advanced. Teachers speak only in the language they teach. For instance, in English class, everything is done in English.

This exchange really helped me feel more confident when speaking a foreign language. I learned new vocabulary, but more importantly, I started picking up on more natural ways of expressing myself. I also noticed that I now find it easier to approach new people, which is something I struggled with before.

People there were incredibly welcoming. Even when they heard my accent, they would come up and talk to me to help me practice. I really appreciated how kind and supportive they were.

To anyone thinking about going on an exchange, I’d say: go for it, and don’t be afraid to reach out to others. That’s how you grow and improve. The whole point is to immerse yourself in a new culture, so don’t stay in your comfort zone—get out there, connect with people, and make the most of every moment.
