Wrapped in scented fabric and disguised in the darkness, one finds a subversive sanctuary. Disorientation in the midst of mirrors and lights mimics the experience of being underwater, creating a liminal space where security is found in the simultaneous invisibility and luminescence.
Scent Profile: Seaweed, fresh cut grass, stone accord
Given the ubiquity of modern surveillance, our relationship with the nature of being seen has only grown increasingly complex. Though the intention of these monitoring systems is to keep us safe, it stands in direct opposition to the desire of animals to be invisible when seeking sanctuary.
In this immersive installation, the mirrors placed in a natural environment mimic the way in which we are watched no matter where we turn. Surrounded by idyllic nature but caught in a scented web, the viewer is disoriented by the innumerous reflections of themselves. Though confounding, the ability to see everything around oneself creates a paradoxical sense of safety, mirroring our relationship with modern surveillance.
Scent Brief: Animalic note through tinctured gelatin, Dark Woods tincture of mushrooms and soil, Sweet tincture of brown sugar and honey, Stone accord
This altar pays homage to the harmonious balance found in nature. The candles placed within the ice vessel melt the frozen water, slowly dripping into the pool of water below, from which water is vaporized into a fine mist that moistens the surrounding soil. The scent from the candles and the ice is slowly released as the wax burns and the ice melts, changing the balance of the notes throughout the duration of the installation. Ultimately, this ever-evolving sculpture captures time, allowing the viewer to have a ritualized experience of nature.
Inspired by the childhood memory of reading under the blankets and being transported to a completely different world, I created a piece that captures the expansive potential found within the pages of a book. The warm light embedded within a hollowed out book glows beyond the confines of the paper, beckoning a reader to come explore. The pages are scented with vanilla extract and rose petals to capture the dream-like experience of being immersed in a fairytale, while the fabric fort the book is placed within is scented with dryer sheets.
Scent Profile: Dried rose petals, vanilla extract, clean linen scent from dryer sheets
This scented wearable captures the dream of weightlessness in flight. Feathers made of folded paper were dipped in scent, so that that scented wafted through the air as the translucent fabric moved.
