Completely transform walking in the cold into an experience of warmth and memory. The cocoa and vanilla scent and soft fabric create the feeling of sitting by a warm fire, while the wool on the outside of the mask keeps you actually warm. This was inspired growing up in the foothills of Colorado and the utter joy of putting on soft slippers and having a cup of hot coco or hot'nilla (a vanilla based version of my families creation). The book pages are reminiscent of times spent reading a book by a warm fire with your warm cup in your hand.
Scent: Vanilla, Chocolate, Nutmeg, Cinnamon
Each element of this altar is a moment of self-reflection. Alters are generally made for offerings or sacrifices and have been used throughout the ages all across the world. Altars are used across a large variety of belief systems. A commonality among these altars across the borders of religions were the use of center pieces and the use of a table or ledge to set items upon. The altar often comes out in layers from a main point. A consistent theme among altars is the fact that are often used to reflect outwards be it to a deity (such as a Hörgr altar) or even ancestors (such as Taoist altars). This altar does not look outward, rather it focuses inward. This is an altar about self reflection. Many altars are about worshiping or outside focused reflection. This alter inverts this idea and is a space for self reflection. There are a variety of reflective surfaces, but unlike many altars there are no mirrors. Mirrors give us clear images, but they are distorted and reversed, so they are a clearly portrayed lie. The background of this is a reminder to reflect on yourself, but you have to do the work, the mirror does not do it for you. The water around the altar is to represent our words and thoughts and how they change the molecular structure of water (See Dr. Emoto’s experiments https://www.masaru-emoto.net/en/crystal/). Our bodies are 60-70% water, so these effects on each other. The paint inside the water reference ideas of appearance being surface level. The altar is hidden behind a film to represent that too consistent self reflection may cause one to become overly self conscious. The changing light shows the changes we go through as humans.
