For this project, I wrote a poem inspired by Father Serafim’s Arameic singing in the cathedral. This song gave me an impression of something ancient, earthy, ashy, and heavy. It feels intense and full. I imagined jewel tone colors when listening, like emerald green, deep purples and wine reds, and rich indigos.
Stone and Clay
In the cathedral I see you and your
Eyes black blue emerald green
Glistening dripping onto the floor the
Ash creeping into my lungs the sun
Sits on my wrists and burns them
You look at me in an ancient
Language you crumble fold
Burnt paper between the
Knuckles of your fingers the
Bones the songs they crunch
Your ribs the way they
Expand and disappear
All over again
Every night
We walk and graze our palms
On the walls this earth try
to remember the heaviness of this
feeling the way we drown
In ink how we linger in these
Halls the sounds permeating
Every wall sticky and rotting
How you and I have collapsed
Into the crevices the cracks the
Wrinkles in our faces the
Mountains that have blossomed
On our backs
We stand here in the cathedral
And feel the soles of our feet
As they sink into the mud and
Stay there until we are stone
and clay once more
Our altar was meant to honor the Pagan festival of Samhain, the last of the three major harvests and the end/beginning of the wheel of the year. The most sacred festival to the Celtic people, Samhain takes place over the course of three days and celebrates the end of the harvest and summer, the beginning of winter, saying goodbye to the Horned One (sun god) who will be reborn again on Yule, welcoming the goddess, and giving thanks. It is also a time to celebrate and communicate with the dead as it is the time when the veil between this world and the next is the thinnest. In a Neo-Pagan style, we also chose to honor Persephone as she makes her journey to the underworld for the winter.

For my altar challenge, I was thinking again about the aesthetics of the Samhain ritual and how I could make the altar feel more personal to me. I decided to go about this by making a mini Samhain altar that a young, 70s teen witch might create in her bedroom on her vanity. I tried to tie in a lot of the same elements and objects of the original altar (tablecloth, pumpkins, black stones, bottles, old writings, candles, etc.) with more personalized aesthetic objects, primarily the Rumours album by Fleetwood Mac. I also included my magic potion in the challenge, which I made from port wine, vanilla, brown sugar, balsamic vinegar, and peppermint tea. I put the potion in a hollowed out red apple. In addition, I added the scents dark woods, smoke, stone, and resin around the altar.

The flower burns on earth
"You leave again
And I am never ready
I am never prepared
I am always aching
Always swollen
Hurt, touched where only
Scars grow, rotting
I look up towards the sun
And stare until the
Light creates petals
In my vision,
Blurring you from me
I can’t tell if it’s your
Glow or the way my
Eyes melt when
I see you,
But something burns here
A branding on the skin
That is cool to the touch
You live in the clouds
And when I finally feel
I can reach you
You are gone again,
Pulling me up by the
Stem only to crumple me
In your palm
So gently
I hardly notice
I love you, it hurts me
And I love you, I love you
Even when you burn so bright
That the filaments of my skin
Break off like butterfly wings
I love you I love you."

For Sanctuary Part 1 I was inspired by the nights during your childhood when it's thunderstorming outside and you seek comfort and shelter inside your bedroom. I also wanted to incorporate the film E.T. The Extra Terrestrial into the project because it's one of my favorite films and one that makes me feel awestruck, safe, and nostalgic for the sanctuary of my earliest years. Outside the fort, I emulated the night by projecting lights and stars.

For my final sanctuary project, I created a safe-space inside of my car, focusing primarily on light and noise. I covered the inside of my trunk with black tablecloths that I adhered glow-in-the-dark stars to. In the passenger and driver's seats I strung lights. To tie in the E.T. component from part 1 of this project, I played a combination of songs from the E.T. score with ambient deep white space sounds (to recreate the feeling of being in space). In the end, the car to me became a safe space (hence the writing of “it’s okay” on the windows). It was warm and bright (as opposed to the freezing cold outside), and the area with the stars in the trunk of the car felt vast and infinite, despite the fact that I was only inside a car.
