Program Description

• The Trillium Drug Program (TDP) helps Ontarians pay for their high prescription-drug costs.

Eligibility Criteria

• Live in Ontario
• Have a valid health card number
• Do not already qualify for the Ontario Drug Benefit program (for example, you are not enrolled in a program such as Ontario Works)
• Do not have an insurance plan that pays for 100% of your drugs
• Spend about 4% of more of your after-tax household income on prescription drug costs

The Link below provides the Trillium Drug Program application. The TDP year is from August 1-July 31. Be sure to apply by September 30 to be reimbursed for any eligible drugs you received in the previous program year.

OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan)

Program Description:

Most essential medical services are covered by OHIP. For services where hospitals charge a fee, there is often a less costly option that is covered by the provincial health plan, (ie: casts - there are several options with an additional fee, however plain plaster casting is covered)

Eligibility Criteria:

• Resident of Ontario with a valid health card.
• Newcomers are subject to a waiting period of 3 months
• Must be physically present in Ontario for 153 days of the first 183 days after the day you apply

Federal Tax Credits

Program Description:

• The government provides medical tax credits for working individuals with low incomes and high medical expenses. Certain prescription medication is eligible for the medical expense tax credit. Low income families can apply for a medical expense tax credit on their income tax.

• You should also speak to the doctor who gives you the prescription if you are unable to afford the medication as they may be able to provide samples or access subsidized medication directly on your behalf with drug companies.
