Do you want to become a doctor, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, pharmacist, or any other health care provider that deals with the knowledge of medication?
If you answered yes to the majority of these questions this pathway is right for you!!
Pharmacy technicians assist the pharmacist in the preparation and distribution of medications, maintaining the drug inventory, patient and pharmacy records in a manner consistent with all federal, state, local laws, and regulations. In pharmacy tech you will also learn the top 200 drugs commonly prescribed, learn the process to make a variety types of medication, IV bags using the aseptic technique, and learn how medication works in the body. You have the opportunity to take the ExCPT exam to become a certified pharmacy technician. My pathway student organization is HOSA where you have opportunites to compete in health care competitions, extend your learning, and network with other people in the same field.

Pharmacy Tech Pathway Outline:
Freshman year- introductions to our HOSA organization, medical terminology, history of pharmacy, integumentary system, cardiovascular system, and digestive system. Body systems will focus on anatomy, physiology, and medications for the system.
Sophomore year- continuation of medical terminology, nervous system, endocrine system, and urinary systems. Body systems will have the same criteria as freshman year. Students will learn the Teen CERT program from FEMA and start learning about pharmacy laws and organizations.
Junior year- BLS certification, Stop the Bleed, and the continuation of pharmacy technician concepts. Pharmacy concepts will include sterile vs. non-sterile compounding, brand/generic medication names, and medical math. Students will also register with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy as a technician trainee and purchase their scrubs and lab coat for senior year.
Senior year- continuation of learning pharmacy concepts of the top 200 drugs commonly prescribed, utilizing the NHA CPhT curriculum, take exam to earn the CPhT certification, and complete externships at CVS.

Externship Opportunities
If your student chooses this pathway they will have the opportunity to become a registered pharmacy technician trainee with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy and earn hours behind the pharmacy counter at CVS. Students will be able to create their own externship hours and be assigned a local CVS near their home to complete this required task for our program.
