Ask yourself these questions:
Are you good at math and science?
Do you want to have a foundation of medication and the health care industry?
Do you like hands on activities?
Do you want to become a doctor, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, pharmacist, or any other health care provider that deals with the knowledge of medication?
If you answered yes to the majority of these questions this pathway is right for you!!
Pharmacy Tech Pathway Outline:
Freshmen year- introductions of medical terminology, skeletal, muscular, integumentary, cardiovascular, blood/lymphatic/immune systems.
Sophomore year- continuation of medical terminology, respiratory, digestive, nervous, endocrine, urinary, and reproductive systems. We will also learn about health care laws and different health care settings.
Junior year- CERT certification, BLS certification, and the introduction of pharmacy technician concepts. Students will register with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy as a technician trainee.
Senior year- continuation of learning pharmacy concepts, CPhT certification, and externships at CVS.
If your student chooses this pathway they will have the opportunity to become a registered pharmacy technician trainee with the State of Texas and earn hours behind the pharmacy counter at CVS. Students will be able to create their own externship hours and be assigned a local CVS near their home to complete this required task for our program.
There are lots of options for competitions! If you advance we travel around the state and in the United States for international competition. We also go to leadership conferences where you meet professionals in the health care setting and other students from other HOSA chapters. Click on the first link to see the different competitions there are to choose from. Second link is our State of Texas HOSA website.

Quote from Nicole A. a pharmacy tech pathway student and 2020 graduate from CTHS:
"Pharmacy Tech means business you have to study hard, but just like a business you also make connections- and those are just as important."

Quote from Luis T. a 2018 CTHS graduate:
"Do you enjoy helping others? Would you like to learn about careers in the healthcare industry? Tired of learning straight out of textbooks all the time? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may be a good fit for the health science career pathway. This pathway provides students with the proper foundations necessary to work in the real-world healthcare industry, including hospitals, pharmacies, outpatient centers, and more! As a student in this pathway, you will engage in unique hands-on activities that will undoubtedly prepare you for jobs upon completion of the various certifications we offer, such as the Pharmacy Technician Certification, Sterile Compounding Certification, CPR Certification, to name a few. You will have valuable opportunities to apply the topics learned from classroom instruction in actual settings, such as by interning at Walgreens Pharmacy, volunteering at local hospitals, and going on actual ambulance ride-alongs. Although this career pathway offers you innumerable opportunities to grow as a student and future professional, do not feel intimidated! You will have the support from the most qualified teachers who also have had years of experience working in the healthcare industry. The healthcare pathway at CTHS welcomes you to this fun and valuable journey!"
Please take care!!!!
Best regards,
