Pharmacy Technician
Pharmacy technicians assist the pharmacist in the preparation and distribution of medications, maintaining the drug inventory, patient and pharmacy records in a manner consistent with all federal, state, local laws and regulations. In Pharmacy Tech you will also learn the top 200 drugs commonly prescribed, learn the process to make a variety types of medication, IV bags using the aseptic technique, and learn how medication works in the body. You can earn the nationally recognized PTCB certification and IV SPAT certification for our pharmacy tech pathway. You need to have a social security number and a valid state identification in order for you to test for IV SPAT, PTCB, and complete CVS/Walgreen's hours.

Pharmacy Tech Pathway Outline:
Freshmen year- introductions of medical terminology, skeletal, muscular, integumentary, cardiovascular, blood/lymphatic/immune systems.
Sophomore year- continuation of medical terminology, respiratory, digestive, nervous, endocrine, urinary, and reproductive systems. We will also learn about health care laws and different health care settings.
Junior year- CERT certification, BLS certification, and the introduction of pharmacy technician concepts. Students will register with the State of Texas as a technician trainee.
Senior year- continuation of learning pharmacy concepts, IV SPAT certification, CPhT certification, and externships at CVS and Walgreen's.
Externship Opportunities
If your student chooses this pathway they will have the opportunity to become a registered pharmacy technician trainee with the State of Texas and earn hours behind the pharmacy counter at CVS and Walgreen's. Students will be able to create their own externship hours and choose a local CVS and Walgreen's near their home to complete this required task for our program.
There are lots of options for competitions! If you advance we travel around the state and in the United States for international competition. We also go to leadership conferences where you meet professionals in the health care setting and other students from other HOSA chapters.
