Emergency Medical Technician
(EMT)
The EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) pathway teaches the information and hands on skills that are needed for the EMT certification. You will learn how to care for people in emergency and non-emergency settings; for example: car accidents, falls, CPR, trauma, chronic medical conditions, and much more. By the end of the course you will be prepared to take the certification exam and begin working on an ambulance or in a hospital nearly immediately.
What IS an EMT?
GREAT QUESTION!

Why should I join EMT at CTHS?
Yet another wonderful question!

Hands-on skills like splinting broken bones and treating burns
Use real life EMT tools like back boards, a stair chair, and Epi-pens
And much more! Plus...
- WE HAVE A REAL AMBULANCE!
Our very own ambulance!
What does an EMT do?
I am so glad you asked!
As an EMT, you will be able to help people who are suffering from illnesses or injuries including:
Low blood sugar
broken bones
Heart Attacks
Strokes
and so much more!
You would also respond to events like:
Car Accidents
Medical Alarms
Fires
and much more!
Additionally, you would:
drive the ambulance
write reports
and meet new people almost everyday!
What does it take to get my certification?
It takes dedication, hard work, studying, and FUN!
In addition, the state of Texas requires these things:
Be 18 (don't worry about this if you will graduate before your 18th birthday!)
Earn your High School Diploma/GED
Complete an EMT Course (that's this class!)
Pass your National Registry Exam
Apply to the State and Pay the fee
"I'm not sure I can do this job."
That is exactly what that girl to the left said! (That's me!)
I was worried that I wouldn't be good at helping sick or hurt people. I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to handle the blood! I tried it anyway and I FELL IN LOVE with it!
The rush of excitement flowing through your veins when the first call comes in is an experience you will never forget. Seeing someone injure themselves...and knowing EXACTLY what to do, makes you feel like a superhero!
To you friends and family you will be you. To the little kids waving as you drive down the street with your lights on and sirens wailing, you look like a hero. To the person whose loved one you just saved from death, you ARE a hero.
We don't do this job for the fame or the glory. We do this job because people need our help.
You CAN do it.

Where can I work as an EMT?
When you are an EMT, there are several job opportunities that open up to you. The most common job that people think of when they hear Emergency Medical Technician, is working on an ambulance!
There are many Emergency Medical Service (EMS) companies around you! Also, a large number of fire departments are combined Fire and EMS.
Don’t think you want to work on an ambulance? Wait!! There are other jobs you can consider! Some of these jobs include working at:
A hospital or Emergency Room
A transfer ambulance company
An EMT school (this will require additional certifications after high school)
A medical helicopter service
The military
and even Tactical EMS agencies!
Becoming an EMT can start you on the path towards any of these jobs. You may have to get additional training for them after high school, but your EMT certification will help you get there!
What is your favorite part about being in the EMT pathway?
Kadence Medina - Class of 2022
"My favorite part about the EMT pathway is being able to socialize every day with my classmates, having the potential of helping the community in the near future, and being able to have the advantage of obtaining an EMT-B certification before graduation."
Diamond Ervin - Class of 2023
"My favorite part about the EMT pathway is that it introduces you to the medical pathway, it shows you what to expect if you plan on moving up higher on knowledge and skill and it really gives you a leverage on hard work because some is just revisiting and expanding on the knowledge you already have."
Ismael Garcia - Class of 2022
"My favorite part of the EMT pathway is the hands-on learning and the teacher."
Fernanda Estrada - Class of 2022
My favorite thing about being in the EMT pathway is working under pressure and having to think on the spot for interventions; helping people is extremely fun!
A few tips for you from real CTHS EMT students:
Martha Pacheco- Class of 2022
"Take all 4 years of your pathway seriously. Stay on top of your work and don't fall behind."
Ruby Garcia - Class of 2022
"One tip would be to read your assigned chapters in the book, and to become friends with your classmates because y'all will rely on each other throughout the whole year."
Matthew Mendiola - Class of 2022
"One tip I would give is have fun while you’re learning the skills and don’t just go through the motions."
Alana Gibson - Class of 2023
"Some advice is to get along with your classmates as you will become a team together. I’d also advise you to keep the knowledge you learn from all years as it will greatly help you in senior year as well as out in the field."
