GREAT QUESTION!
EMT stands for Emergency Medical Technician. An EMT is someone who responds to medical emergencies and non-emergencies to provide life saving medical care for a wide variety of patients!
Community Emergency Response Team (C.E.R.T)
BLS CPR/AED through AHA
National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician
Texas Department of State Health Services - Emergency Medical Technician
Yet another wonderful question!
In this pathway you will get to do FUN things like:
Medical Scenarios
CPR/AED Training
Interactive bleeding control skills, including how to use a tourniquet
Hands-on skills like splinting broken bones and treating burns
Use real life EMT tools like back boards, a stair chair, and Epi-pens
And much more! Plus...
Our very own ambulance!
I am so glad you asked!
As an EMT, you will be able to help people who are suffering from illnesses or injuries including:
Low blood sugar
broken bones
Heart Attacks
Strokes
and so much more!
You would also respond to events like:
Car Accidents
Medical Alarms
Fires
and much more!
Additionally, you would:
Drive the ambulance
Write reports
and meet new people almost everyday!
It takes dedication, hard work, studying, and FUN!
In addition, the state of Texas requires these things:
Be 18 (don't worry about this if you will graduate before your 18th birthday!)
Earn your High School Diploma/GED
Complete an EMT Course (that's this class!)
Pass your National Registry Exam
Apply to the State and Pay the fee
That is exactly what that girl to the left said! (That's me!)
I was worried that I wouldn't be good at helping sick or hurt people. I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to handle the blood! I tried it anyway and I FELL IN LOVE with it!
The rush of excitement flowing through your veins when the first call comes in is an experience you will never forget. Seeing someone injure themselves...and knowing EXACTLY what to do, makes you feel like a superhero!
To you friends and family you will be you. To the little kids waving as you drive down the street with your lights on and sirens wailing, you look like a hero. To the person whose loved one you just saved from death, you ARE a hero.
We don't do this job for the fame or the glory. We do this job because people need our help.
You CAN do it.

When you are an EMT, there are several job opportunities that open up to you. The most common job that people think of when they hear Emergency Medical Technician, is working on an ambulance!
There are many Emergency Medical Service (EMS) companies around you! Also, a large number of fire departments are combined Fire and EMS. Can you think of any ambulances that you have seen? What department were they? You could work there!
Don’t think you want to work on an ambulance? Wait!! There are other jobs you can consider! Some of these jobs include working at:
A hospital or Emergency Room
A transfer ambulance company
An EMT school (this will require additional certifications after high school)
A medical helicopter service
The military and even Tactical EMS agencies!
Becoming an EMT can start you on the path towards any of these jobs and more! You may have to get additional training for them after high school, but your EMT certification will help you get there!
Read what current and past EMT senior students say about their own pathway below!
"My favorite part of being in EMT is the excitement that I get when I think about how many cool things I get to learn to save someone that is in critical danger. The things that I'm going to see in the future makes me nervous and scared at the same time, but happy that I get to have this opportunity to be in this program, because not a lot of kids have this opportunities' for what ever reason. Also the friendships I have made in this class is important because we help each other out."
"In the EMT program myself, one of the most rewarding aspects would be the opportunity to make a real difference in people's lives during critical moments. The hands-on experience and the ability to provide immediate care and support are incredibly fulfilling. "
Avery Owens - Class of 2025
"My favorite part of the EMT pathway is learning critical skills to save lives and help the community."
Alana Gibson - Class of 2023
"Some advice is to get along with your classmates as you will become a team together. I’d also advise you to keep the knowledge you learn from all years as it will greatly help you in senior year as well as out in the field."
