LYNN'S TEACHING TID BITS

Got a minute?  Here's a Teaching Tidbit that will make the Ferris Buellers of this world excited for class!

Catch this two-minute video on how to use Google’s Socratic app to create interactive exercises for your classes. It’s free for students to download on their cell phones. It works with the Google search engine, so you can use it in class. Plus, students can use it out of class for homework or for their own research.

Google's Socratic, Bueller will never want to skip a class again!

EMPLOYEE RECOGNITION

PROFESSIONAL GROWTH

PVCC FACTS AND CULTURE

As a learning-centered college focused on providing excellent student outcomes, Paradise Valley Community College is proud to recognize Chemistry Faculty Julie Olander for her efforts in making a positive difference in the classroom.

Olander was recently awarded the 2022 Dale P. Parnell Distinguished Faculty Recognition. She follows other recent PVCC faculty winners including Dr. Dina Preston-Ortiz (2019), David Bradley (2020), and Dr. Casey Durandet (2021).

Olander has served as chemistry faculty at PVCC since 2014 and as the college's faculty developer since 2018. In the chemistry classroom, Julie promotes student success by helping each student discover their own system for learning, unpacking, and then applying intimidating course content. Chemistry is taught alongside "how to learn" chemistry, the concept of which is not "built in" for most students. Upon completing the class, her students know the terms organization, rigor, practice, challenge, planning, prediction, connection, priming, and reflection.

Established in 2018, this recognition is named in honor of former American Association of Community College (AACC) President and CEO Dale P. Parnell. The 2022 recipients will be honored at AACC Annual 2022 on May 1, 2022.

Paradise Valley Community College How Did It All Begin?

On May 2nd, 2022 it will be the 35th anniversary of PVCC's Dedication Day. Enjoy this brief video of how Paradise Valley Community College came to be an integral part of North East Phoenix.

PVCC Sculpture - 35th Anniversary

Landscape Architect/Sculptor Bob Watkins shares the story of how the sculpture, located in the center of the Paradise Valley Community College in the recently renamed, Cordova Plaza, was created in a 30th Anniversary Celebration video.

The sculpture above represents the educational process, moving from basic knowledge to complex ideas. The three simple shapes: circle, triangle, and square ascend and transform into more complex forms: the ellipse, parallelogram, and isosceles triangle. Similarly, through education, an individual is continually transformed; growing and changing to understand complex ideas and thoughts."
