Week beginning - Monday 2nd February 2026
Take a peek at all the amazing things we've been learning this week!
Dear Parents and Carers,
We have had another busy and exciting week of learning in Year 2.
Inquiry:
In Inquiry, we have been continuing our work on life cycles and observing different living things. This week, the children completed some research and then used this to write a fiction story about how an animal grows, inspired by The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The children used a storyboard to help them plan their ideas before writing, which really supported them in structuring their stories. They produced some truly beautiful work, and we cannot wait to put these fantastic pieces up on the wall for everyone to see!
Maths:
In maths, we have finished our unit on money, and the children did really well demonstrating their knowledge and understanding. We are incredibly proud of how confidently they applied their learning. We have now started our new unit on multiplication and division. The children have shown the learner profile attributes of thinker and risk-taker as they have begun exploring this new topic and tackling new challenges. It would be really helpful for the children to practise the 2, 5 and 10 times tables at home. This can be done using the Times Tables Rock Stars logins in your child’s reading diary or by using the multiplication grid which can be found on Google Classroom.
NSPCC Number Day:
We had a great time on number day completing loads of really fun maths based activities both in class and around the rest of the school. It was great to see so many of you dressed in clothes with numbers all over them.
GPaS:
In our GPaS lesson this week, we focused on consolidating all the skills that we have been fine-tuning over the past few weeks and applying them to our story writing. We have been seriously impressed with the way the children have used their knowledge and transferred it into their writing. In 2H, Professor Pig has been completely blown away by the brilliant presentation and effort shown by the children!
Miss Beamish:
Today, 2H said goodbye to Miss Beamish as she returns to Leigh Academy Marden to finish her training. We have been so lucky to have her with us and will really miss having her in class. Mr Houghton and Miss Beamish are currently setting up a pen friend programme between the two schools so that we can share our learning and see what children in other schools are getting up to, which we are very excited about.
Thank you for your continued support, and have a lovely weekend.

Pupil Voice
Inquiry:
(2HB) Connor - We have been learning about life cycles through fiction and non fiction texts.
(2HB) Lenny - We have been story writing in the style of 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar'.
(2B) Tori - I liked planning the story and writing a silly sentence.
(2B) Frankie - I liked writing the story because it was fun.
(2OB) Frances - I'm writing my story about a monkey.
(2OB) Jovi - My story is about a penguin. I like writing it.
Maths:
(2HB) Evie G - This group has 4 children in it, but this group has 5. So they are not equal.
(2HB) Jenson F - Equal groups means the same amount in both groups.
(2B) I liked using the number line and drawing counters.
(2B) Archie - I loved using pencils and rulers and practicing using them.
(2OB) Jim - There are equal groups and there are unequal groups.
(2OB) Brooke - That group is unequal because it doesn't have the same number of circles in.
GPaS:
(2HB) Emily - He starts as an egg, then he turns into a caterpillar, then into a butterly. That is the sequence.
(2HB) Evie K - The Hungry Caterpillar eats lots of food in the same sentence, so there are commas in between each thing so the reader can have a pause.
(2B) Umaru - I liked including fries in the silly list of things the tadpole could eat.
(2B) Harrison - Writing sentences was complicated but not too hard and not too easy.
(2OB) Ronan - The Very Hungry Caterpillar was written for children.
(2OB) Ananya - The storyboard helps us to sequence our stories.
2H
You have been a risk taker and communicater this week when acting out the story of 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar'. You have also produced some truly beautiful story writing inspired by the story. Well done!
2B
You have proved this week that you have amazing thinking skills in how you connected the Italian word aqua to the English word water. You surprised and pleased the whole class. Well done.
2OB
You have been a wonderfully principled learner this week. Your confidence in maths has grown hugely and you are demonstrating a strong understanding of our new learning. Keep up the excellent work!
2H
You have shown a real intrest in reading at home and have even shared some of your reading with your classmates. Well done Willow.
2B
This week you had to perform part of the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. You managed to read fluently and with expression whilst crawling across the floor pretending to be a hungry caterpillar. It made us all smile. Well done.
2OB
Your phonics and knowledge of sounds has come on hugely. You are so confident when reading aloud and are reading with excellent fluency. Keep up the fantastic work!
