We cannot believe our second term is nearly complete. With the transition into Autumn and the days drawing in,
the children have continued to astound us with their learning.
Our topic 'From Ant to Elephant' has lead our learning in lots of different directions. Take a look at some of our highlights.
The children are doing brilliantly in Phonics. Every day begins with our phonics session and lots of children are beginning to read simple words with the sounds they know. Remember to use your sound cards to revise over the holidays, and keep on bringing in book bags and reading at home!
We started with a firework poem, learnt and innovated 'Owl Babies', then completed our term learning about non-fiction texts with gingerbread man instructions.
The children are becoming famiiar with the structure of a story and you can spot this in their narrative play.
The children have engaged with lots of practical activities to build fluency, working with numbers within 6. We have explored zero and addition and subtraction using a part-whole model. The children have also been practising one more and one less/fewer.
We have discussed and been engaged with hands-on activities related to capacity, weight and length.
Our self-regulation areas are a key component of our classes. The children use the space to wind down and reflect on their feelings. We are learning to name our feelings, with a link to our zones of regulation. Stories such as 'Ravi's Roar' and 'Ruby's Worry' have helped us to understand new language and how to use it when we need to express ourselves.
Now that we are settled into school, we are working on building relationships with our peers and working collaboratively. We have had the opportunity to play lots of turn-taking games which helps develop our patience and empathy for our peers.
You may have also noticed that we have had several class treats this term. We work collaboratively to earn marbles in our jar, and the reward reminds us that hard work and kindness always bring good things!
Physical Development is part of our day to day learning. The children are developing gross motor skills through being active outside with activities such as balancing on scooters and skateboards, lifting and building with big blocks and playing with equipment such as hula hoops. In their PE lessons the children have been working on their agility and doing gymnastics. The children practice fine motor skills by manipulating small objects and by cutting, drawing and writing.
We have been working on speaking in full sentences and using the new vocabulary we have learnt. It has been great to observe the children using new words such as 'branch', 'decorate' and 'silent' in their play. Our 'Talk Through Stories' also supports the children to develop new vocabulary, with a focus book each week guiding us to explore new words in an engaging way.
