Mac text-to-speech, also called Speak Selection, is an accessibility feature that exists on your Mac that allows it to read aloud any text that can be selected (text in word processing programs, websites, PDFs and even some ebooks).

Click the Apple icon (upper left corner)/System Preferences.
Click Accessibility.
Choose Spoken Content on the left menu.
Select the checkbox, Speak selection.
Adjust Voice and Speaking Rate.
Close Settings.

The controller allows you to speed up/slow down speech, jump to the next/previous sentence, pause speech and stop speech.
Click x to close the controller.

Using the cursor, highlight text you want read.
Press Option+Esc to start text-to-speech.
Press Option+Esc to stop reading or the stop icon on the Controller.
