Text-to-Speech
Students using their OUSD Chrome accounts do not have access to add extensions. Please request this extension through your teacher or case manager.
Open a Google Doc.
Click the Read&Write extension on the upper right of the screen.
If you do not see the Read&Write extension, click the jigsaw icon to open the Extensions window. Click the pin to "pin it" to the extensions bar.
If the icon is not available, please request this extension through your teacher or case manager.
Read&Write's toolbar will appear below the browser address bar.
Students may have access to all Premium features for 30 days. After the trial expires, they will have access to:
Google Docs Toolbar - Text-to-Speech and Translator (languages
Web Reader Toolbar - Text-to-Speech and Hover Speech.
Highlight a word/words or place the cursor in front of the text you want read. Click the Play button.
Read&Write will begin reading, highlighting the sentence and words.
Click to pause or stop.
Click the three dots on the right side of the toolbar to access Options to change Voice and Speed.
Open a web page.
Click the Read&Write extension on the upper right of the screen.
Read&Write's floating toolbar will appear. Play, Pause, Stop and Options are the same as explained above.
Click the Hover icon (a purple line shows it's activated).
Hover reads text on websites by hovering over the text you'd like read.
Hover the cursor over a word and Read&Write will begin reading.
Click the Pause, Stop or Hover button to stop.
Familiarize yourself by using both Google Docs and Web Reader tools.
