What is Are Virgina SOLS?
According to VDOE (Virginia Department of Educatoion) "The Standards of Learning (SOL) for Virginia Public Schools establish minimum expectations for what students should know and be able to do at the end of each grade or course in English, Mathematics, Science, History, Social Science, and other subjects. These tests measure the success of students in meeting the Board of Education’s expectations for learning and achievement. All items on SOL tests are reviewed by Virginia classroom teachers for accuracy and fairness, and teachers also assist the Virginia Board of Education in setting proficiency standards for the tests (VDOE 2022)". Depending on what grade you are in determines how many Sols are going to take.
What are the Pro and Cons of SOLS?
Helps ensure that all students are held to high standards.
It helps Students pepare for higher education.
it Holds students and teachers Accoutable.
It creates a universial standard for for education.
Students who have disabilty might struggle.
It is not an accurate exam
students and teacher cant see what question got wrong .
It isnt a fair exam some students who are very smart might fail and vice versa.
What is the purpose of SOLS ?
On the VDOE website it state "SOL tests are designed to assess whether students meet specific minimum expectations for learning and achievement expressed in the Standards of Learning. Tests are developed through an extensive process of review and field testing to ensure that tests are fair and of appropriate difficulty for the grade or course (VODE 2022)".
