Black History Month is a time of remembrance, learning, and renewal. It invites us to reflect on the many ways Black people have shaped Canada’s past, strengthened its present, and continue to imagine its future. For students, families, and educators across the Ottawa Catholic School Board (OCSB), this month offers an opportunity to engage with Black history not as a single moment in time, but as a living story carried across generations.
This year’s theme, “Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations: From Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries,” centres continuity. It recognizes the contributions of Black Canadians whose labour, leadership, and creativity helped build communities, institutions, and movements, often in the face of exclusion and injustice, while affirming the brilliance of today’s Black youth who are already shaping conversations and imagining new possibilities.
