Much like the Redstone program, the AtIas program did a test of the launch escape system. The mission profile went in this sequence. First the engines were ignited at T-3 like a real launch. Once the count was at T-0 the abort command was given. This separated the capsule from the vehicle and the capsule touches down on parachutes a small distance away.
