Project Apollo sought to go farther and higher than anyone had ever attempted. It sought to not only go to the moon, but to land people on the surface of it. The program was split into two parts, the Saturn 1B and the Saturn V missions. The Saturn 1B was a small launch vehicle used for orbital testing, and was the first NASA launch vehicle that wasn't originally a missile. The other one, the Saturn V (5) was the one that carried astronauts to the surface of the moon, this one was also the first to not be derived from a missile. Both Saturn launch vehicles were created by Wernher von Braun, the same one who created the Mercury-Redstone. The program lasted from 1966-1972 with a total of 18 missions.
