Just like the Redstone, the development for the Atlas began by doing investigations into the workings of the real vehicle. After that the first prototype was built.
After that the design was streamlined by doing things like making a fairing between the lifter and the capsule for less drag
Next came developing the fuel flow system, as well as integrating the Vernier engines (small side mounted engines meant for attitude control). In addition a reaction wheel was added for more control. After that the next prototype was complete.
After that the final change was made, removing two of the three Vernier's from each side. Then we were ready for flight. Below is a comparison between my version and the real thing
