Like always, development of the Saturn 1B began with research of the real thing. Once that was done, it was on to the first prototype.
The first prototype was actually fairly close to the final one in terms of structure, the only changes were performance related
This one if nearly identical to the first one, except for the fact that fins have been added to improve ascent control
The final version was just adding the milk stool, the piece that elevated the vehicle so it could fit the launch mounts for the larger Saturn V, since the pad for 1B had been decommissioned due to the Apollo 1 disaster, where three astronauts lost their lives during a test of the vehicle due to a fire.
