Saturn 1B was created to conduct orbital tests for the CSM and LEM (Crew Service Module and Lunar Excursion Module). It was, as previously mentioned, the first vehicle to be created for the purpose of space exploration. It ran a total of 3 missions as part of the Apollo program.
