Tips to Stay Safe While Trick-Or-Treating

By Brenda Barrios

Halloween is the one time of year when kids get to dress up as their favorite characters and go out trick-or-treating. However, it is always best to remember to be safe during Halloween because monsters can still be lingering around. I went to Spirit Halloween in New Rochelle to interview parents about their approaches to Halloween safety.

“What do you do to ensure your children are safe while trick-or-treating?”

Many parents go in groups and take their children to known places and safe neighborhoods. Parents of little ones typically try to take them out when there is more light outside.

“I grew up in the south Bronx, so I never trick-or-treated in my neighborhood. I usually went where my best friend lived in Jersey, but you should choose a neighborhood where you feel safe walking around in.” - Kathy

“Kids should be aware of their surroundings and respectful to others.” - Ashton, Spirit Halloween worker

“Do you check your children’s candy? If you do, what are some things you look out for?”

“If my kids open a candy, we just kind of look at it and see for the most part.” - Sarah A.

“Once my kids go to sleep, I will throw away all the candy they got while trick-or-treating and fill it up with new candy that I got from CVS”. - Mireille P.

“What age do you think is appropriate for children to go trick-or-treating by themselves?”

Some parents would let their children trick-or-treat by themselves at around 14 to 16 because by then they would understand how to be safe.
