Tri-M National Music Honor Society: A Year in Review

By Luca Lazzarini

As the academic year unfolds, the Tri-M National Music Honor Society takes a moment to reflect on the musical journey it embarked upon in the 2023-24 school year. This year witnessed increased community involvement and continued recognition of musical achievements and excellence.

With the dawn of the 2023-24 school year in September, Tri-M welcomed a new advisor, Mr. Byers, who joined the district as the new band teacher. Byers vocalized, “It has been such an honor serving as this year’s advisor for Tri-M. We are an honor society that is dedicated to music-based community service within both the school community and New Rochelle at large. I am looking forward to seeing other ways that these dedicated members will be able to positively promote music within our school in the coming months.” Tri-M appreciates Mr. Byers for bringing innovative ideas from his previous schools to the club and dedicating himself to its success. Tri-M also thanks Ms. Stancarone for her contributions to Tri-M. Under her leadership as advisor, she oversaw the growth of the club and planted the seed for Tri-M’s musical excellence.

October saw New Rochelle High School as the host for Area All-State Rehearsals, culminating in performances in early November. 400 musicians, amassing 41 school districts in Westchester County, were in attendance. 29 of those were students from New Rochelle High School. Performance groups included a band, orchestra, two choruses, as well as a symphony orchestra. Tri-M members actively participated in both performance and organizational aspects, showcasing their commitment to musical excellence. Junior Jasper Todd, who is a french horn player, said, “As a two-time veteran of the Westchester Area-All State Ensembles, I can honestly say that participating in it [the performance] is always one of the highlights of my year. The importance of playing with other highly skilled students, under the direction of brilliantly talented conductors cannot be understated.” He later added, “If I could recommend anything to an aspiring musician, it would be to pursue one of the many sought-after seats in the ensemble.”

Members then formed instrumental and vocal groups, dedicating themselves to the intricate art of chamber music. These efforts led to a performance at a local assisted living home, Willow Towers, in December, where even a resident joined in a band ensemble to perform the classic "Moon River." 22 students performed and represented not only Tri-M but also our entire music department. Sophomore Beatrice Montenegro, percussionist in the band, said, “It was such an amazing opportunity to be able to play for our senior citizens. Their past generations have inspired the musicians of today.”

Tri-M's commitment to the community extended to the festive season with the creation of candy-grams, a tradition preceding winter break. Students and staff members received the opportunity to craft a message to whomever they wished, and to then have it sent to the person attached to a candy cane. There was even a holiday carol included! Tri-M members crafted the personalized messages and performed the carols spreading joy through the melodious spirit of the season.

As we usher in the new year, Tri-M looks forward to a calendar filled with exciting events and activities. With dedication and passion at the club’s core, the club is poised to execute its plans and continue contributing to the musical tapestry of New Rochelle High School and the community.
