On Friday, September 29, extremely heavy rain led to severe flooding in New Rochelle. On average, New York gets 4.3 inches of rain during the entire month of September, but on September 29 alone, parts of New York, like JFK airport, received 8.5 inches of rain (The Weather Channel). In light of the torrential downpour, Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency for New York City, the Hudson Valley and Long Island.
New Rochelle High School suffered especially damaging flooding. At the end of period 2, students were instructed to remain in their period 2 classrooms and by around 11:30 am, students were dismissed by house. Students who did not have transportation home were allowed to wait in the Whitney M. Young Jr. Auditorium.
New Rochelle High School reopened for a normal day of school on Monday, October 2, but the library and weight room remain closed. This is particularly unfortunate because the library had only recently reopened in March following the devastation from Hurricane Ida in 2021.
