October 1, 1949 - Mao Zedong declared the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, marking the beginning of communist rule in China.
October 4, 1957 - The Soviet Union launched the first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1, beginning the Space Age.
October 14, 1066 - William the Conqueror defeated the English army in the Battle of Hastings, leading to the Norman takeover of England.
October 16, 1793 - France executed its former queen, Marie Antoinette, during the height of the French Revolution.
October 19, 1781 - The British defeat at Yorktown effectively ended major combat in the American Revolutionary War.
October 24, 1929 - On Black Thursday, the U.S. stock market crashed, triggering the Great Depression.
October 28, 1962 - The U.S. and Soviet Union reached an agreement that marked the end of the Cuban Missile Crisis.
