As winter sports season approaches, a recurring question in many students' minds is “Should I join a team?" Engaging in team sports not only promotes physical health, but also fosters valuable life skills and strong social connections.
Participation in school sports promotes physical fitness, helps combat obesity, and encourages a healthy lifestyle. However, sometimes, that isn’t enough motivation to join a team or a sports club. People often fail to recognize the connection they could make with other teammates after joining a team, and how much it helps students build friendships and connect with peers.
Many student athletes at our school, such as Cameron Joseph (Freshman, Track team), can confirm the numerous benefits of joining a team, including making lasting friendships. When asked for a positive aspect of joining a school team, Cameron stated that "Joining a team can help in making new friends and building community." Aiyana V. (Freshman, JV soccer team), agrees that joining a school team helps to build friendship. The best part about joining a team? "Being surrounded by people who share a similar interest as you," she said.
Of course, the commitment to joining a team requires a sacrifice of your time, but it presents an opportunity to learn proper time management. If a team at New Rochelle is your first experience in school sports, the adjustment may feel significant, changing your day beyond the typical 8 hours we’re used to. But with this change comes the potential for growth and discovering new strengths within yourself. Ethan Hill (Freshman, JVB football), said joining a school team "teaches you to be a better person". When asked about a positive aspect of joining a school sports team, Jake Minaya (Freshman, JVB soccer), said that he loved the encouragement he received from his coaches.
