Huguenot Herald Rundown: Glen Island Bridge

On October 26th, Westchester County Executive George Latimer announced the “Proposed County Budget for 2022”. The budget includes plans for internal improvements including the rebuilding of Glen Island Bridge.

The Glen Island Bridge is a bascule bridge that connects mainland New Rochelle to Glen Island. Spanning 500 feet, it was built in 1930 as part of the redevelopment plan to transform the former Glen Island Amusement Park into the county park known today. Last rehabilitated in 1994, the Glen Island Bridge was deemed to be in “Overall Poor Condition” according to county inspection reports from 2018 and on.

Latimer has allocated a budget of $48 million to revitalize the bridge. The plan calls for a temporary drawbridge to be built while the current drawbridge is torn down and rebuilt. There are no publicly available plans as to the aesthetics of the revitalized bridge.

Latimer hopes that this bridge proposal, along with other internal improvements will allow the county assets to be funded and be protected for years to come, in order to revitalize and make sure that the county's assets are prepared and deemed safe for future generations of Westchester Residents.
