Goodbye Leibman’s

In early March, the original Leibman’s building on 510 Main Street, along with the Old Grant Department store building, were torn down and a new apartment-style high-rise will be built in their place.

Leibman’s is a children's clothing store that has been located at 510 Main Street since 1926 and has been a staple of downtown New Rochelle for decades. The store manufactured its own clothes when it first opened and expanded to include camp and scout uniforms in the 1950s. School uniforms became the focus of Leibman’s in the 1960s, according to the Liebman’s website.

Leibmans has since moved to 518 Main Street in 2020 where it has expanded to a larger space.

In the place of the original Liebman’s store, a 26 story mixed use development will be put in its place. The new development will be called 500 Main Street and will include 477 residential units and 2,100 square feet of retail space. It will also include a ground floor church, along with a parking garage that will include on-site parking spaces.

This development comes as New Rochelle has gone through a major downtown redevelopment in the last few years. As of right now, there is not a time of completion for the project and major development details about the project have remained unavailable to the public.
