The NPS Instructional Core Site was designed to provide all NPS educators an opportunity to "choose your own adventure" in professional learning based on your professional needs and interests. Suggestions for getting started are located on the home page.
Additional professional learning opportunities are below. Some of these are self-directed (individually or in PLC) and some may require a coach or another leader to facilitate.
Getting Started with Culturally Relevant Pedagogy
Please reach out to Wendy or Kristen to engage in this professional learning opportunity. The series will be adapted to fit the needs of your PLC. This session will ground you in the work of Culturally Relevant Pedagogy (CRP) including concepts around the Courageous Conversation Framework, the Instructional Core, and How the Brain Learns. Next, you will build a shared understanding of culture, cultural identity, and cultural archetypes. Finally, you will explore how CRP is a critical component of the SRBI Framework and apply CRP principles to your practice.
Empowering Educators for Effective PLCs
This self-directed professional learning was developed for the November 2, 2022 session. In this session, you will explore different ways in which PLCs can engage in the "just right" work to meet their professional needs and the needs of their students. Next, you will understand why prerequisites, prior knowledge, explicit vocabulary instruction, and SEL are critical Tier One strategies based on how the brain learns.
The learning playlist, "Understanding Race and Racism" was developed for a team of NPS administrators to build a shared understanding of how race and racism affects students' lives inside and outside of public schools. The team engaged in this shared experience prior to launching a choice book club that featured several texts.
The United Way of Southeastern Michigan sponsored a 21 Day Equity Challenge that provides a closer look at topical issues related to systemic racism, inequity and injustice. "Each day, you will receive a short introduction to a topic along with a few challenge options, like reading an article, watching a video, or reviewing an infographic. Set aside 15-20 minutes to consume as many of the resources as you would like and take a few moments to reflect on what you have learned ..."
The Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race & Ethnicity offers a self-directed professional learning series on implicit bias. Welcome to the Kirwan Institute’s Implicit Bias Module Series. "This course will introduce you to insights about how our minds operate and help you understand the origins of implicit associations. You will also uncover some of your own biases and learn strategies for addressing them. Each module is divided into a short series of lessons, many taking less than 10 minutes to complete. That way, even if you’re pressed for time, you can complete the lessons and modules at your convenience."
