STUDY: Study focus standards for upcoming unit.
PRIORITIZE: Identify the essential concepts and skills that all students must master. Note prerequisite skills and concepts that will be required for students to access grade level content. Consider prior knowledge that will make learning relevant and meaningful.
PRE-ASSESS: Determine prior knowledge with a focus on student understanding of prerequisites using diagnostic or formative assessments.
ANALYZE: Consider if a gap exists for the whole class, small group, or individual.
DESIGN CHALLENGING TASKS: Based on priorities, learning experiences must align to grade level expectations.
FOCUS ON STUDENT SELF-EFFICACY: Instill a belief that students will meet expectations. See this video for more on self-efficacy.
SCAFFOLD LEARNING (Build background, embed prerequisites, build vocabulary): In order to meet expectations, students will require varying levels of support. Watch this video about the Challenge-Support Matrix. For whole class needs, plan to build needed scaffolds into lessons. For small group needs, differentiate instruction or coordinate to address gaps within intervention blocks.
RESPOND TO STUDENT NEEDS: Utilize ongoing formative assessment to monitor progress and respond to needs "just in time".
