Open Letter to the Leaders of Africa

Dear Leaders of Africa,

You must not sit and watch silently towards the mass murder of animals.

I have seen that there has been a rise in poaching in Africa. I say this respectfully, that you aren’t doing anything to stop it. I am aware that you have helped tremendously to develop Africa and that you have helped to develop the other continents of the world. I, having seen this development first hand, am thankful for the work you have been doing during the recent years. However, many people, including myself, do not feel at ease with your silence towards poaching happening in your countries.

A murder of these animals causes disorder to the system in the animal world. This is just like the human world, where chaos stirs when death visits. In the animal world, poachers focus mainly on killing old matriarch elephants, because of the fact that their tusks are bigger. However, they are the ones that provide the social glue in the elephant herds. This means that there is a higher chance of the herd disbanding, putting more elephants in danger. As this shows, the animal world and the human world reflect each other in great detail. Being a leader or social glue is not a trait that one easily develops. I know for a fact that you are aware of this. If the leader or the glue disappears, the whole society will fall apart. The human world has a lengthy list of these horrifying moments, such as the Rwandan Genocide of 1994. This incident was horrifying for all people around the world and it had brought chaos to each lives living in Rwanda. This is the reason why we should know not to harm a community forcefully, and to try to stop the sources of these forceful attacks.

Right now, there is only a minimal number of unique and wild species left around the world, and Africa preserves many of these species. This means that Africa must become more serious about stopping poachers, to protect the species. Currently, Africa has roughly 1,350 endangered species. As the leaders of Africa, you must be aware of this fact and protect these species, while helping the world to become balanced and safe for all animals.

This letter represents the voice of the people who are worried about the recent rise in poaching in Africa. This represents the voice of all the elephants, rhinos, and other iconic African wildlife that are killed everyday by the poachers. This represents the voice of our future generations, who might not be able to see these precious lives because of the poaching. This represents the voice of the those who are living right now, who would have to tell their children that the animals don’t exist because you, the leaders of Africa, remained silent in regard to the poaching happening right under your watch.

These voices call to you. These voices call to you to take action towards these violations, rather than to sit and remain silent.

Many people, including you, may doubt the ability of a government to stop poachers. However, the government of Nepal has succeeded in stopping the poaching, and is now protecting the animals that it has inherited from nature. Now it is your turn to protect the species that you have been blessed with. I believe that you would be able to achieve this, for you have developed Africa to such an extent, and have helped the world develop at an astounding rate.

Africa is a great continent, and will keep on improving under your exceptional leadership. I hope that you would choose to act rather than to be silent towards the illegal poaching, ensuring a dynamic environment for the future of Africa.

Sincerely yours,

Environmentalist
