7th October 2019

Dear Grazebrook families,

Last week saw the first of our weekly library trips to Stoke Newington library; we began with Year 3 but all of our pupils will have an opportunity in the coming weeks. Why not check out the library at the weekend or after school and look out for their special events - did you know there is a weekly book club for children over 8 as well as lots of events in the school holidays? Utilising our library well is a key aspect of our reading for pleasure focus so we would love to hear about your visits outside of school too, perfect for those rainy days that may be on the way!

We are very pleased to share with you that our school sustainability councillors have been appointed and have had their first meeting. They are very keen to help the school continue the legacy of The World We Want project and plan ways to make the school even more sustainable. Please see either me, Mr Kilty or Mr Smith if you have any suggestions, links to agencies or any other ways in which you can help.

I have had a couple of concerns raised recently by members of our community regarding parking and driving in the school's locality. Please could I ask that parents who drive are mindful of parking safely in our local streets. Or even better - walk, cycle or scoot to school; many thanks for your cooperation.

A plea once more for your generosity, we have partnered up with Hackney Foodbank who are looking for items to distribute to those in need across the borough. We have already had a number of items dropped of to the school office and would gladly welcome any further donations. Thank you in advance.

Have a lovely week,

Jess Hutchison

Love of Reading

Reading, reading everywhere!

At Grazebrook we read everywhere - even if it is dressed up in costume, raining outside or on a visit to our fabulous local library or bookshop. Nothing gets between us and our books.

Do share with us pictures of you reading in unusual places - we'd love to put them in our reading albums and in this bulletin.

Where's the strangest place you have read a book?

Please also continue to bring in any of your no longer needed books, we are delighted to receive donations and the children get very excited to have new books to explore.

Curriculum Rocks!

Most of our topics have had a history focus for this half term but Year Three have had a science element to their topic too. They have been learning all about the different types of rocks and how they were formed.

The children had a special delivery from the Royal Geological Association - a box of rocks! It was fantastic to see how excited the children were and how well they have learnt the different types of rock as well as how fossils are formed.

Thank you to all our families who have been bringing in precious rocks and stones and for all our fabulous home-learning projects. We have even had a rock inspired, volcano cake with an accompanying and very detailed explanation about igneous rock formation.

This links nicely with our Stone Age to Iron Age topic too where we are learning how prehistoric peoples used different rocks for different purposes and then how life changed when humankind discovered the use of metals.

Reception Superstars

Our Reception children have settled in so well; It is hard to believe they have been in school just over a month.

The school's routines have been so quickly established and our pupils are enjoying their daily maths and Read Write Inc sessions a great deal as well as getting outside whatever the weather.

Our first parent workshop on using the Interactive Learning Diary was well attended, please see your class teacher if you were not able to join us. This week sees our Read Write Inc parent session on Wednesday, we would love to see you there from 9 am.

A huge thank you to all of our families for their support and a really big well done to the reception children and the staff team. What a dream start to the year - it can only get even better!

The PSA website is a great source of information, including upcoming events, lovely photographs of past events as well as a space to suggest fundraising ideas and see what projects the PSA is currently supporting in school - coming soon a big book swap to support our love of reading initiative. Thank you as always Friends of Grazebrook!
