State Envirothon Competition: RESULTS!!!

By: Isabelle Smith~Features Editor~May 27, 2021

Congratulations to the Northern Cambria High School Envirothon team as they have placed 13th out of 58 counties that participated in the state competition! This is a huge accomplishment for the team to have made it this far. They have contributed their free time to study for this competition, and it paid off. Also, a big thank you to Mrs. Kerr as she has also put a lot of time and effort into the team and coaching them through this Envirothon season!

As we send off the seniors who have been a part of the Envirothon team, we would like to thank them for doing their best and making this season memorable. The seniors that were on the team this year include the following: Gary Smith (Team Captain), Alyssa Delosh, Caleb Stivanelli, Taylor Lefebure, and Steven Blickenderfer. These members will be greatly missed next year as they have contributed an endless amount of time and effort to strengthen their team to the state competition.

One last congratulation to Mrs. Kerr and the Envirothon team as they have made history being a part of the Northern Cambria High School Envirothon team and being able to advance this far in the competition. It was a job well done by the Envirothon team!

Sweet Reminders of Seniors' Past School Days

As seniors prepare to graduate and give their final farewells to the high school, they received a few sweet reminders of some of their past years at NC.

One of these reminders surprised seniors who were once part of NC's "preschool class." These seniors were called to the office recently where they each received a kind note and photograph from their pre-school teacher, Mrs. Kirsch. Her kind words and thoughtfulness meant much to them, and the photographs brought back some good memories and surprises as they saw their young faces.

The second reminder of the past was distributed in ELA 12 class, when this year's seniors received folders containing several pieces of their writing from freshmen year. The folders also held memories in the form of letters from 6th and/or 7th grades.

Although the seniors are truly looking forward to moving on, many parts of their NC experience, whether it's their elementary, middle, or high school years, will stay with them always.

The seniors also wrote about and posted their dreams and plans for the future. These Senior Dream cards were displayed in Mrs. Frontino's classroom.

Stepping up in the Envirothon State Competition!

By: Isabelle Smith~Features Editor~May 13, 2021

Big congratulations to the Northern Cambria Envirothon Team as they have placed top 15 in the first round of the State Envirothon Competition!! They will be moving on to the next round in the state competition where they will be given a scenario and must create an oral presentation about it. They will have until May 20 to turn in a pre-recorded version of their presentation.

Then, on May 25, the team will meet with five judges through a zoom session and to answer a series of questions the judges will be asking regarding the presentation.

May 27 will be the live award ceremony to determine which teams will move on to the next level. Mrs. Kerr is beyond proud of her team as she has stated that this has been her first year to have an Envirothon team make top 20 in the state competition! Good luck to Mrs. Kerr and the Envirothon team as they take on the next step in the State Competition!

Our NCHS Choir conducted by Ms. Susann Colonna

On Tuesday, May 4th, 2021, the high school chorus and band held their first concert in over a year! Last year, due to Covid-19, they were unable to hold any type of spring concert. For Christmas, the band and chorus were able to record themselves and make a video for everyone to enjoy. But finally, they were able to host their first semi-live concert since the pandemic.

Originally, the concert was going to be held outside so anyone in the community could come and watch safely, but due to poor weather conditions, the concert was instead held inside the high school auditorium. Only parents of the senior class were allowed to attend due to Covid-19 guidelines. But for everyone else at home, the concert was live streamed for anyone to watch!

This year’s theme for the concert was “We Are Here!” After not being able to perform for so long, this was a very fitting theme. The chorus started off the concert under direction of Ms. Susann Colonna with “True Colors” by Steinberg, Kelly and arranged by Brent. This lovely start to the concert featured soloist Rebecca Perrone. Here is a list of the rest of the songs the chorus sang as well as any featured soloists.

Hamilton Highlights - L.M. Miranda, Arr. DeSpain

Solos: Mary Kudlawiec, Zoey Baran, Rebecca Perrone, Alayna Edmiston, and Zabrina Deyarmin

When You Believe - S. Schwartz, Arr. J. Leavitt

After a brilliant performance by the chorus, the band then took the stage under the direction of Mr. Luke Besong. They started their portion of the concert with “Siege” by Randell Standridge. Below is a list of all the songs played by the band.

English Folk Song Suite - Ralph Vaughan Williams

  1. March: Seventeen Come Sunday

  2. Intermezzo: My Bonny Boy

  3. Folksongs from Somerset

Shenandoah - Frank Ticheli

Congratulations to both the chorus and band on a fantastic performance!

Advancing in Envirothon: Northern Cambria Earns First Place at County Competition!

By: Isabelle Smith~ Features Editor~May 1, 2021

A huge congratulations to the Northern Cambria Envirothon Team as they placed first in the county competition and are off to the state competition! The state competition will be held on May 10 and May 11 which will be held virtually. This year has been difficult all together for the team since the county competition was virtual, and the team members have had to study the material independently, in their free time.

This year's Envirothon members include Gary Smith (Team Captain), Alyssa Delosh, Caleb Stivanelli, Steven Blickenderfer, Taylor Lefebure, and Isabelle Smith. These students have devoted much of their free time to studying and preparing themselves for the competitions. The topics that all Envirothon teams are to study are Aquatic Ecology, Forestry, Soil and Land Use, Wildlife, and Current Events. This year, the tests were set up on a google form and were timed to limit the students to 30 minutes per test. The following data displays the scores earned by the NC Envirothon team.

Aquatics- 68

Current Issue- 80

Forestry- 68

Soil and Land Use- 76

Wildlife- 62

Total- 354

Two other teams had the same score, meaning they tied for second-place. The NC Envirothon team had beaten the second place teams by 101 points!

The NC Envirothon team is hoping for the best at the state competition and is continuously studying their materials to showcase their knowledge at the virtual competition. As we send Mrs. Kerr and the Envirothon team to the state competition, we wish them good luck!
