Northern Cambria High School ~ Home of the Colts
Wish the boys PJ Copeland, Peyton Meyers, Tyler Bearer, and Daniel Phillips congratulations on defeating the record on April 7th during their meet against Marion Center and Blacklick Valley.
This year the track team at Northern Cambria had a late start to the season due to constant pushes in the schedules for winter sports. With a small team, the players are ready for an exciting season full of action-packed meets and fun team practices to start a good season.
A few words from sophomore Madison Hassen highlights a player point-of-view for those who missed the season this year. ¨It´s disappointing to see such a small team this year. But that doesn´t stop my drive and determination to do the best I can this season, I am actually looking to break a record. It's hard to adjust to the new coaching, but I know we can make it work.¨ Madison is striving to terminate the previous triple jump record and set a new number to create Northern Cambria track history.
The team has a completely different coaching staff this year. Mr. Montanaro and Mrs. Westrick passed the gauntlet to two other very excited head coaches for both boys and girls. For the boys, Derek Bearer and for the girls, Coach Chelsea Brady has taken the reins. Sadly, according to Mr. Montanaro, due to a lack of participation, the junior high track team has been canceled for this season. Encourage your friends to join the track team and wish them good luck on their first meet on April 2nd and check back for weekly reports on scores and updates regarding the season.

Connor McDavid is looked at as one of the best, if not the best, player in the NHL right now. He and Leon Draisaitl, almost alone, make up the power force of the Edmonton Oilers, a top five team at this time. His rise to the claim of a “star” was a fast one, mounting to the top within a short five years. He is for sure looked at as a future hall of famer, in only a third of the time.
Before the NHL he played minorly for the Toronto Marlboros, and won the “Player of the Year” title from it. He was granted the rare “Exceptional Player” title too, which allowed him to play hockey professionally a year before he was old enough to do so. He didn’t disappoint professionally either, as he was drafted 1st overall by the Erie otters. It would only take about three more years for McDavid to make it to the grand stage where all hockey players aspire to be, the NHL.
As noted earlier, the “Exceptional Player” didn’t hold back, over taking veteran players that have played for years within only two or three of his own. He has secured twenty-two awards, an overabundance in his young age, and has played Olympically for both Team Canada and Team North America. “The Next One,” deemed by players and spectators alike, is projected to not only be the lead scorer this year, but also to bring his team to the Stanley Cup for years to come.

Auston Matthews would be next in line for the player of the year, being a year younger than McDavid and bringing all that he can. He may not be leading in points, but as of right now he is the powerhouse of shooting, holding the most goals at twenty-one, five over Connor McDavid. He is playing on the Toronto Maple Leafs, the number one team in the entire league.
Matthews got into hockey after watching an Arizona Coyotes game, where Alexander Ovetchkin scored the famous goal, titled simply, “The Goal.” He realized at this point that he wanted to get into hockey, and in 2010 he started playing. He was drafted 57th overall in a Junior league, but decided to drop out of it. He joined the USA Hockey National Development team, where they trained him to his peak. He joined recognition fast from NHL scouts, and was named the “Most Valuable Player” in the division.
In 2016 he was drafted First Overall into the NHL by the Toronto Maple Leafs, and with the addition of Matthews, the team quickly became a top tier team. The Leafs are expected to make it to the “Stanley Cup” and with Auston Matthews they could easily attend to first place. Let’s see which one of these teams make it, because most spectators, and super fans alike, agree that it’s destined for at least one of those two.
Pittsburgh Penguins, a name that once drove fear into any team or fan that was about to step up against them in the rink. Five Stanley cups are under their belts, and big names such as Mario Lemieux, Sidney Crosby, and Evgeni Malkin layer with those. From being a top three team in their division for years, they’ve had a drop in ranking. Is this temporary or is this what Penguins fans have to look forward to? It could be a very icy road for the hometown heroes.
When the modern day Penguins come up in anything, the name Sidney Crosby will be dragged with it. Crosby is an incredibly skilled player, even in the first few games he played in the NHL. With over 400 goals, and 1200 points, he’s most certainly secured a place in the hearts of hockey fans. He had recently played his 1000th game, and with that people from other teams also started looking into him.
With Crosby in the spotlight, his teammates were shining, too. Or so people thought, and they realized fast that a player that had been there right with him from the dawn hasn’t been living up to their expectations-- Evgeni Malkin, the Alternate Captain for the Penguins.
He is regarded to be “just as good as his captain, sometimes worse, sometimes better.” As of late, though, he hasn’t been up to standards, even in his own mind. He stated in NHL.com that, “He’s not happy with his game right now,” and that “he vows to improve his game to better the team.” With seventeen games played and only four goals, two of which were power play goals, he’s not doing as well as he used to, nor wishes to do.
Another big name that was lost some time ago was goalie Marc André Fleury. He stayed with his team for 13 seasons, helping the Pens win two Stanley Cups. He’s played over 800 games and 22,000 saves, and played over par when he was with the Pens. He was eventually traded off to a new team, a team that has found much more success in the Knights, and the Pens needed a new goalie. They went through multiple other goalies, and have ended up with their new one this year.
Tristan Jarry is starting off his fifth season as the starting goalie for the Penguins. He’s led them through twelve games thus far, and has secured half of the victories. Usually this would be a below average play level for the hometown heroes, but with the rough road of goalies they’ve been having, Jarry could be a shining pillar of light for the team. Let’s hope he doesn’t burn out too soon, and will keep their defensive side up to par.

With star players such as Patrick Mahomes, Tom Brady, and Rob Gronkowski, the Super Bowl this year was sure to be contested. That is what you’d think, and before watching I thought the same. With a team that was dominant over all else like the Chiefs, they were surely the top dog walking in. With a packed team on the Buccaneers as well, we all sat down, ready for an insane game to take place… but it never did.
The Buccaneers ended up winning with ease, really in the second quarter. Quarterback, Tom Brady, ended up throwing 3 touchdown passes in over two hundred yards, and the team ended up with a staggering 31 points.
Tom Brady took home the MVP spot once again, totaling up with his fourth one. The top dog, Chiefs, ended up garnering… 9. Nine total points, with zero touchdowns to back them up. All nine of the points were scored in field goal kicks, the team never crossing the holy touchdown line.
The Chiefs couldn't seem to get anything going for them, from the line to the ends. Patrick Mahomes thought otherwise, even though it ended up in nothing. He threw an even more staggering number of yards, totaling 270 yards. He might not have thrown a single touchdown pass, but watching the game we can see where the problem seemed to come from… the line.
Most football fans could tell where the problems are coming from. While watching this game, it was much, much easier to see the weak spot than ever before. Every time Mahomes would start the play, the entire line would fold. Allowing two to four players to storm the QB, forcing Mahomes to run back and have a very rough time landing many passes. In my opinion, this is what ended up forcing an upsetting loss onto the Chiefs, but many other things probably took into effect. Maybe next year's Super Bowl will be much more contested!

The following students have been selected to participate in the Heritage Conference Teams. Congratulations to these athletes!!
At last, PIAA has resumed with the continuation of winter sports. Sadly, with the restrictions of capacity, there will be no spectators allowed at games and meets, which means a lack of photographs for school publications! Please feel free to submit some pictures of your student-athlete, which could also be from years past, to Mrs. Frontino.

Due to Governor Wolf’s Covid Statement, winter sports have been placed on hold for the remainder of 2020. He has decided to do this due to the surge of cases in recent months, and with the holidays approaching, the belief that it’d just be safer to put sports on hold until the new year. This statement expires on Saturday, January 2nd, and sports at Northern Cambria High School could possibly start up on Monday, January 4th, 2021. More information will follow as the state and NC’s local school board make future decisions regarding winter sports. Our Winter Sports being affected are Swimming and Boys & Girls Basketball.
Interviews to be seen in the near future.
