Christmas is the time of year when we spend time with friends and family to make memories that will last a lifetime. What better way to do that then to create holiday ornaments! Here’s a super simple and easy way to make homemade Christmas ornaments. They’re very easy to personalize, so they can match your style and home!
What You Need
1 cup of flour
1 cup of salt
½ cup of water
Ribbon or string
Cookies cutters/paint (anything you want to decorate with)
First, you will need to preheat the oven to 200 degrees. Then, simply combine all three ingredients into a bowl and mix. Once the dough is mixed, roll out the dough evenly and cut it into the shapes. You can simply use cookie cutters to make cute Christmas shapes, or you can cut out a circle with a cup or bowl and use a pet’s footprint as the decoration. This would also work well with hand prints or fingerprints. Next, you will need to make a small hole at the top. This is where you will tie it with ribbon or string to hang on a Christmas tree. Once all your shapes have been cut out and imprinted, bake them for about two hours. It is recommended that you flip the ornaments halfway through baking for the best results. Once they are done baking and cooled, you can start decorating! There are no rules when it comes to decorating your ornaments, so just have fun with it! You can be as creative and festive as your heart desires. Once happy with the decoration, tie them with string and hang them on your tree for everyone to see! If desired, put the date on the back of the ornament to remember when the ornaments where made in the coming years!
Remember, even though they may look delicious, these ornaments are not to eat! They are for decoration purposes only!
‘Tis the season to be festive! With Christmas around the corner and other major religious holidays happening soon, December is an important month for tradition. All around the world, in places like India, Czech Republic, and the Netherlands, people celebrate with a variety of traditions! The traditions explained here are from overseas and are incredible.
In India, the Hindus celebrate Diwali. This is a huge five-day festival of lights that is observed in fall, and although it is not a December time holiday, it is still an amazing tradition for Hindus and definitely worth mentioning. Other traditions that they celebrate are honoring the Hindu deity Lakshmi, which represents wealth, and creating rangoli, which are elaborate colorful patterns made with paint.
In Czech Republic, they celebrate St. Nicholas Day. This is celebrated on December 6th. On St. Nicholas Day, children dress up as angels and devils. This is due to the day being based on St. Nicholas, a fourth-century Greek Bishop who protected children. The bishop is accompanied by an angel and a devil.
In the Netherlands, they celebrate a similar named holiday also called, “St. Nicholas Day.” They celebrate by leaving traditional clogs or regular shoes by the fireplace or door. They then fill the shoes with hay or carrots. They do this for St. Nick, or Sinterklaas’s white horse, in hopes that small gifts will replace this offering.
These are just some of the traditions and holidays celebrated in other countries other than the United States. Knowing about these traditions can help us appreciate the different traditions all over the world.
