Everyone likes to celebrate Valentine’s Day, also known as the day of love, but not many people know the story behind this special day and why we celebrate it. Here is a brief overview of how Valentine’s day came to be.

There are many different stories and beliefs of how Valentine’s Day was established. It is said that the famous day got its name from the priest of Rome in the third century A.D. who was named St. Valentine.

St. Valentine was a man of love, so when the ruler, Emperor Claudius ll, had banned marriage becauses he thought it made men weak and bad soldiers, Valentine had to do something about it. Valentine had arranged secret marriages in private for everyone who wished to marry their significant other. Soon, Emperor Claudius ll found out about Valentine’s private marriages and threw him into jail. While Valentine was in jail, he had found his own love, the jailer’s daughter. Since Valentine had broken the rules, he was to be executed on February 14th, but before he was taken on that day, he sent the jailer’s daughter a letter that was signed, “from your Valentine.”

Now, you might be thinking, “Well, why did we start celebrating Valentine’s Day?” The celebration of Valentine’s Day started in the year 496 when the Romans held a festival in February, a tradition for the start of their springtime.

During this festival, boys were to pick a girl's name from a hat and the two would become boyfriend and girlfriend for the festival. Sometimes these pairings would end up getting married. Later, this festival would become a Christian celebration and would be used as a day to remember St. Valentine. Eventually, people would begin to use the word “Valentine” to express their love for someone.

Ever since then, Valentine’s Day was celebrated every year on February 14th for people to show their affection for the people they love. So, make sure on this very special day, you also show everyone how much they mean to you.

For Valentine's Day there can be many things you can get for your boyfriend / girlfriend. I am going to share some gifts you can get.

One idea is all about chocolate: chocolate-covered strawberries, chocolate covered pretzels, candy bars, or you can even get a heart-shaped box with chocolates in them from the store.

Another idea is a stuffed animal, and one of the most common stuffed animals people get is a teddy bear.

Also, you can get candy such as lollipops or get your special someone their favorite candy.

A gift card to their favorite restaurant or store is another great idea. Something else is getting a custom book with all of your favorite pictures together.

Those are just some ideas to get your special someone for Valentine's Day.
