Vacation Places: Looking Towards Summer

By Danielle Hendrick ~ Staff Writer ~ May 5, 2021

Summer vacations are always one of the highlights of everyone's year. On these trips, a lifetime of memories await vacationers. Recently it may have been difficult to travel with the restrictions that Covid-19 has placed on us, but luckily we are moving towards a safer world where the virus will be managed and more under control. Here are some exciting places that we may want to consider visiting this summer or summers in the future.

Bora-Bora

Located on a dormant volcano island, Bora-Bora is a part of the Society Islands of French Polynesia. Here one will see clear lagoons and luxurious resorts. A thrilling experience the island offers is a chance to scuba dive with marine life. Visitors can also enjoy wakeboarding, tubing, parasailing, and much more. After an adrenaline rush filled day, you can stay at an overwater bungalow with a private deck.

Venice

The city of Venice is a wonder to see, including historical locations as well as beautiful scenery of Italy. The Galleria dell’Accademia houses artwork from the Renaissance period. Some other places to visit include the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, which is one of the world’s most famed and respected modern art collections, or the Teatro La Fenice, a theater able to seat 1,000 audience members enjoying ballet or live music performances.

Hamnøy

Hamnøy, is a small village located in Norway. There are cozy cabins for tourists to stay in after a long day of hiking and fishing. Visitors can get a “taste” of the history and culture of the region at local museums and restaurants. One of the most breathtaking experiences in this village is the chance to see the Northern Lights.

Maui

Maui is an Hawaiian island. The beautiful beaches offer endless relaxation and fun. Ziplining, horseback riding, and hiking are just a few of the adventures you can enjoy on land at Maui. There is also a chance to attend a luau to watch a hula and learn about Hawaiian culture.

Pailón del Diablo

Pailón del Diablo is a waterfall located only 17 kilometers from Baños de Agua Santa, Ecuador, a small town surrounded by volcanoes, green hills, and rivers. Despite the translation of the name meaning “Devil’s Cauldron”, this is a heavenly place to experience. You can travel to the waterfall by bus, bike, or taxi, however, there is a guided tour provided without the need to arrange your own transportation.

Blue Lagoon

Blue Lagoon, Iceland has been named one of the top 25 Wonders of the World by National Geographic. The lagoon’s soothing, blue water is about 102°F year-round. The lagoon is not natural, but it is still an amazing sight to see. You may also enjoy the chance of viewing the Northern Lights in winter. The water is rich with minerals that do wonders for the skin, so Blue Lagoon makes the perfect destination for a spa day or night.

Although everyone is eager to return to their normal lives, it is important that we take all necessary precautions so we can fully and safely enjoy our summer vacations. No matter whether it is scuba diving in Bora-Bora, observing an elegant ballet performance in Venice, or admiring the Northern Lights in Hamnøy, there will be many chances to create everlasting memories.

National Autism Awareness Month

By Sam Frantz ~ Editor ~ April 12, 2021

During the month of April, we observe Autism Awareness Month. This is a great time to educate ourselves and others about this developmental disability. The Center for Disease Control concluded in 2020 that every 1 in 54 people is on the autism spectrum. Boys are actually 4.5 times more likely to be diagnosed with autism than girls of the same age as them. This is because girls can show autism in different ways, which can result in under diagnoses.

So you might be thinking, what exactly is autism? Autism is a life-lasting developmental disability that can affect social skills, behaviors, and communication. There are different subtypes of autism, which usually include genetic and environmental factors. Autism can be measured by a spectrum, as it can impact people differently. Currently, no one knows the cause of autism, but if the individuals receive the support that they need, they will live a happy and quality life.

Signs of autism usually start early in life and it can be diagnosed as early as 18 months of age. There are signs people can look for in a child to spot autism early on. Diagnosing autism at an early age can help the child get the treatment or care they need. Some things to look for in children are repetition in movement, solitary play, feeling distressed by changes, avoiding eye contact, and many more.

Since autism is a lifelong disorder, there are symptoms that people on the spectrum will experience in day to day life. For example, people diagnosed with autism may struggle with social communication. This may include lack of or not understanding eye contact, tone of voice, facial expressions, and gestures. People with autism may also have repetitive behaviors or movements. This also includes narrowing in on specific topics and a need for routines.

As you can see, autism is an important topic to educate yourself about. This is just the basics about autism. If you would like to learn more about this disorder, look below for some reliable sites to use.

Mental Health Awareness; Finding the Little Joys in Life

By Danielle Hendrick ~ Staff Writer ~ April 19, 2021

According to the CDC, “Mental health includes our emotional, psychological and social well-being”. Throughout our life, our mental health is a very important aspect that contributes to our ability to live successfully and happily. We often focus on our physical health, but mental health is equally as important. As teenagers, our entire life is ahead of us, with so many opportunities to change people’s lives and make an impact on the world. If we do not take care of our minds, it will start to affect our physical health, and this will eventually limit our ability to live to our fullest potential and accomplish all of our dreams. Not only will a negative, unhealthy mindset affect us, but it will affect the people around us as well.

There are many ways to improve our mental health and make life a little easier. Luckily, we are moving towards warm, sunny weather. Although it may be difficult to find the motivation to get outside and enjoy our spring days, make an effort to spend even the tiniest amount of time outside everyday. According to Healthline, a website that informs about physical and mental health, “Exposure to sunlight is thought to increase the brain’s release of a hormone called serotonin”. Serotonin is essentially the “happy chemical” that is produced by the human brain. The sun acts almost as a natural antidepressant. Some more ways of improving our mental health consists of socializing with people that make us feel good about ourselves and happy, maintaining healthy eating habits as well as exercise habits, and doing things that we love, such as creating art, baking, or reading.

Another option to benefit our mental health is talking to a professional. Although not everyone may have access to sessions with a therapist, there are still options for professional help. There are many phone numbers that are available 24/7 to call or text to advise on how to cope with difficult situations in your life and provide support. It is important to realize that the operators are there because they genuinely care about providing their help to the people who need it and making sure there is a safe space. Each person who answers the calls truly cares about the mental health and safety of the callers and is trained to follow rules of confidentiality.

Everyone copes differently with the challenges they face. Although it may be extremely helpful to open up to someone, some people aren’t comfortable expressing their feelings. It's okay to take smaller steps towards more positive mental health. Enjoy the little, happy things life has to offer. Wake up and treat yourself to a hot or iced cup of coffee, enjoy the vibrant colors outside as flowers bloom in spring, visit a local animal shelter to spend time with some cuddly puppies and kittens, or explore a new town in search of a bakery to try a dessert you have never eaten before. Although the human mind can make the worst out of things and make life feel dull and gray sometimes, there is so much to love and so much beauty to living. Sometimes we have to look for the small pieces of happiness to brighten our days.

Living through a global pandemic has affected people all over the world. The lack of socialization and the extra pressure of school that teenagers and young adults in college are facing all around the world has made a large impact. According to the KFF (Kaiser Family Foundation), a nonprofit organization devoted to focusing on national health issues, 56% of young adults have “reported symptoms of an anxiety and/or depressive disorder” throughout the pandemic.

If you are experiencing more negativity in regard to your mental health, remember that you are not alone. We should all take care of our fragile mental health in this difficult time the same way as we would treat a physical injury. We should be gentle with our minds, allow ourselves to heal, and be the most kind we can be to others, because after all, we are all in this together.

Earth Day is Right Around the Corner!

By: Isabelle Smith~Features Editor~April 8, 2021

Earth Day is a day to honor our home and a remembrance to take care of our planet. Many people may recognize this significant day, but not many know the story behind the making of this day. So here is some background history about Earth Day.

Earth Day is celebrated annually on April 22, and it is a day recognized as one that encourages everyone to better protect the environment through awareness and actions. A man by the name of John McConnell proposed to the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) that there should be a day to honor the Earth. The first Earth Day was to be observed on March 21, 1970 but a month later the U.S. Senator, Gaylord Nelson, brought up the idea to make a nationwide teach-in event on April 22, 1970. This event would later be named ¨Earth Day¨. The first Earth Day had an estimate of over 20 million people on the streets. April 22, 1970, remains known as the largest single day protest in human history. Gaylord Nelson had won the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his outstanding work of creating Earth Day.

Every year there is a theme for Earth Day. Although Earth Day is all about protecting our Earth, these themes focus on main categories for helping our environment. This year's theme is ¨Restore our Earth.¨ On EARTHDAY.ORG, there will be a livestream for any Earth Day activists, leaders, and influencers. This will be the second year it will be livestreamed for everyone to see. So make sure on April 22 you go and watch some of the activities that will be presented on https://www.earthday.org!

Celebrating Cesar Chavez Day!

By:Isabelle Smith~Features Editor~March 23, 2021

March 31 is known as Cesar Chavez Day, an important day in history that not many people know about. History teachers usually don't recognize this day when it comes to the time of the year. Here is some insight on the famous day that is slowly becoming national to every state.

Cesar Chavez was born on March 31, 1927, and died on April 23, 1993. He was born in Yuma, Arizona, into a Mexican-American family. He spent most of his life as a manual laborer before he eventually went into the U.S. Navy for two years. After he was in the U.S. he moved to California and married his wife Helen Fabela.

In 1965, Chavez started leading and organizing strikes to demand laborers the right to vote and to give labor workers equal rights in general. Chavez was able to group together an organization called the United Farm Workers (UFW). One of the strikes he led was called the Delano Grape Strike that lasted from 1965-1970. In these strikes, Chavez was inspired by the Indian independence leader, Mahatma Gandhi, to lead nonviolent strikes and boycotts. With Chavez doing these acts and tactics, he was able to gain support from other laborers and leftist groups. The Delano grape strike also led to the Delano growers (company that grows, packages, and ships grapes) signing contracts to increase the wages of pickers. These contracts also agreed to a health plan for the grape pickers and a new safety plan due to the pesticides that are on the crops.

Chavez led another strike that was very similar to the Delano grape strike, but it was called the Salinas Lettuce strike which targeted lettuce growing companies. During this strike Chavez was unhappy with some of the contracts of the Teamsters, which is a labor union. The Salinas Lettuce company had put in a restraining order which did not allow Chavez´s strikes to continue but was able to go on strike for one of the largest lettuce growing companies called Interharvest. With this strike, the cutters started picketing the lettuce fields making the lettuce production decrease by three quarters. Restraining orders were eventually put in order but most of the picketers broke the restraining orders and were fined. Since these strikes did not seem very peaceful to Chavez, he decided it was best to boycott. One of the first targets for his boycott was Bud Antle.

Bud Antle secured an injunction which would prevent Chavez from boycotting. Chavez did not follow the injunction and was sentenced to ten days in prison. During Chavez´s imprisonment many people gathered outside of the prison holding rallies to demand Chavez to be released. Among the crowd of people was Martin Luther King´s widowed wife Coretta Scott King and Robert Kennedy´s widowed wife Ethel Kennedy. Soon after these rallies took place, the California Supreme Court had released Chavez from imprisonment.

From the result of all of these strikes and boycotts Chavez was able to gain improved pay and working conditions for laborers in the 1960s and 1970s, which led to an approval of the equal rights in 1975.

In Chavez´s final years he was in a court battle with Bruce Church, who had sued and claimed that the UFW was threatening supermarkets from continuing to sell red coach lettuce. In 1993, Chavez had a court case hearing in Yuma, but during the case Chavez had stayed at the home of a San Luis supporter. He had sadly passed away in bed on April 23, 1993, at the age of 66.

During and even after Chavez's lifetime, he had received numerous awards. He was awarded the Jefferson Award for his public service that would help the laborers, the Pacem in Terris Award which was a Catholic award that meant to recognize his “achievements in peace and justice¨. After his death he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which President Bill Clinton gave to Chavez´s widowed wife at the White House. Later, in 2006, the governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, inducted Chavez into the California Hall of Fame.

In 2014, former president Barack Obama proclaimed March 31 as a U.S. federal commemorative holiday. The only states that celebrate this holiday are Arizona, California, Colorado, Michigan, Texas, Utah, Wisconsin, Washington, and Minnesota. In Arizona, Michigan, Utah, and Wisconsin. In these states, all state offices and schools are closed on March 31 in remembrance of Cesar Chavez. In California, state offices and schools are closed on March 31 and on April 1. So every state does celebrate this very special day, but only few actually recognize the day with the celebration it deserves. Now maybe when this day comes around you will remember that this was the day a hero to many was brought into the world and fought for safer lives for hard working people.

Is That Really Illegal?

By: Isabelle Smith~Features Editor~March 9, 2021

Did you know that in Pennsylvania it is illegal to sleep on top of a refrigerator outside? Pretty crazy, right? There are a lot of weird PA laws that some people may be breaking and not even know it. Here is a list of PA laws that are a little on the bizarre side.

      • It is illegal to catch a fish with any body part except your mouth. Maybe just stick to a fishing pole.

      • Motorized vehicles may not be sold on Sundays. The reason for this law is to keep Sunday a day of rest for workers, so don't try to purchase a car on Sunday because it won't happen.

      • Firework stores are not allowed to sell fireworks to Pennsylvania residents. So how is someone in PA supposed to get fireworks? Well, you can only legally buy fireworks that don't leave the ground and sparklers.

      • Singing in a bathtub is illegal. There´s more context to this law. This law was made for singers who perform in public. So, it's not illegal to sing in YOUR bathtub, but it is illegal to sing in a bathtub in public.

      • No more than 16 women cannot live together. Yet, there can be 100 men living in the same household. Now that's crazy.

      • If a person is a felon they are not allowed to play bingo. Bingo is a very serious game and there can be no cheaters.

      • Fortune telling is prohibited in Pennsylvania. This law was made because some people have beliefs that the spirit world is real and interacting with the spirit world could bring negative spirits into the real world. This also includes making love potions and maps to buried treasure. Someone needs to find the treasure though, right?

      • A person cannot hunt a big game animal that is swimming and they cannot hunt in a cemetery. I hope no one would hunt in a cemetery anyways, even if it wasn't illegal.

      • No PA resident is allowed to use a goldfish or koi to use as bait while fishing. So, maybe just keep your goldfish or koi in a pond or aquarium.

Tale of Saint Patrick's Day

By: Isabelle Smith~Features Editor~February 24, 2021

St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated every year on March 17, but do you know why? Do you know the history behind this holiday? Well, here is a brief overview of the tale of St. Patrick’s Day.

It all started when a man named Saint Patrick, who lived in Britain at the time, had been kidnapped and taken away to Ireland to become a slave at the age of 16. This was believed to have happened during the fifth century. While he was being held captive, he worked as a shepherd, but he was also able to develop a strong relationship with his God, an experience which converted him to Christianity. Saint Patrick was kidnapped for six years before he was eventually able to escape and return to his family.

After he returned to Britain, he continued to study Christianity. A few years after he returned home, Patrick recounted that he had a vision. His vision was that a man, with the name of Victoricus, had come from Ireland and had a letter for Patrick. The title of the letter read “The Voice of the Irish” in which the people of Ireland had cried out: “We appeal to you, holy servant boy, to come and walk among us.”

So, acting upon his vision, Patrick returned to Ireland as a Christian missionary. He began his work by baptizing many people or “converting them to Christianity.” The people were so pleased that he had converted them to Christianity that they began to celebrate Patrick. The first St. Patrick’s Day was on March 17, 1737, but the Irish holiday was actually first celebrated in Boston. A group of Irish men in Boston had gotten together to celebrate “the Irish saint.” The first St. Patrick’s Day Parade was held in New York in 1766.

And now, St. Patrick’s Day is widely celebrated in the Christianity religion and is known all around the world. Let’s hope this year it will still be able to be celebrated the same way it always has- with cheer and good luck!

The Day the Music Died

By: Isabelle Smith~Features Editor, February 3, 2021

“The Day the Music Died” is remembered by musicians on February 3. Not many people know about this special date, nor have many people heard about the tragedy that happened on this significant day. On this specific day, a disastrous event took place in Clear Lake, Iowa. Here is more detailed information about the devastating event that had taken place.

On February 3, 1959, musicians Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and “The Big Bopper” (also known as J. P. Richardson) took a plane to North Dakota from Iowa, not knowing what was to come. The plane was named the Beechcraft Bonanza and had only 3 extra seats for passengers. This was a very last minute trip for all three of the men. Around 12:55 a.m. on February 3, 1959, the plane took off and a few minutes later the plane entered into a snowstorm and crashed near Clear Lake, Iowa. All three of the great musicians on board were killed, along with the pilot, Roger Peterson. It is still unknown of the complications regarding the plane crash. This tragic event, which took the lives of legendary rock-n-roll musicians is known as the “Day the Music Died.”

"American Pie"

Pictured above is a picture of Don McLean performing on stage.

The photo pictured above shows an article in the newspaper of the three musicians who passed away.

Pictured above is Buddy Holly's wife, Maria Elena Holly.

The song American Pie became a hit in the U.S. in January of 1972 and kept that place for four weeks. The song had also been at the top of charts all around the world, and it was the longest song, at the time, lasting 8 minutes and 33 seconds. The repeated phrase mentioned throughout the song, “the day the music died,” resembles the “loss of innocence” in the early rock-n-roll legends that passed away in the plane crash on Feb. 3, 1959. This is also where the name of the significant day originated.

Even so, there was no clear meaning to the lyrics of the song until April 7, 2015, when Don McLean released his writing notes from the song and auctioned them. The lyrics eventually sold for $1.2 million dollars.

The song artist, Don McLean, had written this song in dedication to Buddy Holly, who died on the plane. Buddy Holly was a role model to McLean, and when he learned about his death in the newspaper, he was only 13-years old delivering papers. He was so devastated by the loss of Buddy Holly that he began to write a song resembling his idol. The song was released when McLean was only 26- years old. The line “February made me shiver with every paper I’d deliver” symbolizes how McLean had learned about the death of Buddy Holly. Another lyric in the song is “...when I heard about his widowed bride,” shows how McLean had not only thought about the loss of Holly, but how his family was affected because Holly's wife was pregnant at the time of his death. McLean had devoted his entire American Pie album to Buddy Holly. The song “American Piewas made to show how America was turning upside down.

Buddy Holly

In the photo above is the sign in front of the Buddy Holly memorial museum.

Charles Hardin Holley was born on September 7, 1936 in Lubbock, Texas. He was An American singer-songwriter and was the main figure for rock-n-roll in the mid-1950s. On February 3, 1959, Holly was to take part in a tour, The Winter Dance Party tour, with a band he assembled with Waylon Jennings, Tommy Allsup, and Carl Bunch. Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson also accompanied the band on this tour. Holly had taken a plane to get to his next destination of the tour which was from Clear Lake, Iowa to Moorehead, Minnesota. Before the plane took off, Buddy Holly was having a conversation with Waylon Jennings, who was one of the performers taking a bus to the next destination. Before they parted their ways, Holly said to him, “Well, I hope your ol’ bus freezes up again.” and Jennings jokingly replied, “Well, I hope your ol’ plane crashes” those words haunted him not knowing what was to happen to Holly that day.

It is sad enough that Holly’s family suffered such a traumatic loss, but it was even harder on his wife who was pregnant at the time and sadly experienced a miscarriage after the crash. After Holly passed, there were many memorials made for Holly as he was an icon to many. There is a statue of Holly made by Grant Speed holding his guitar and is kept at Lubbock's Walk of Fame. Another memorial for Holly is a street named after him and the Buddy Holly Center which is a museum designated only to Holly that shows all of his fine arts. In 1987, there was also a movie made about Holly called The Buddy Holly Story. In April of 2017, the construction of a new performing arts center was being made in Lubbock called the Buddy Holly Hall of Performing Arts and Sciences. The opening of the performing arts center was to be held in 2020, but is still not open to the public yet.

Ritchie Valens

Pictured above is Ritchie Valens

In the picture above is the memorial for the three musicians

Shown in the picture above is Tommy Allsup, the man who lost the coin toss, which led to Valens losing his life.

Richard Steven Valenzuela, also known as Ritchie Valens, was born on May 13, 1941 in Los Angeles, California. He was a signer, songwriter, and guitarist in the early rock-n-roll age. He also accompanied Buddy Holly’s band for the performance in Iowa. Valens and Tommy Allsup had a coin flip to see who would get a seat on the plane, and Valens had won. So, Tommy lived that day and Valens sadly died. The plane killed all of the passengers upon impact. Valens was only 17-years old, which makes him the youngest to die in the crash.

Ken Paquette, a fan of Wisconsin back in 1950, made a stainless steel monument of a guitar along with records with the names of the three musicians on it. Paxton Park in Pacoima was renamed after Valens to “remember his humble background and emulate his accomplishments.” Tommy Allsup, one of the band members Valens performed with, had opened up a saloon called “Tommy’s Heads Up Saloon.” He named the saloon after the coin toss between him and Valens. Thirty-one years after his death, he was finally honored into the Hollywood walk of fame.

"The Big Bopper"

In the photo above is "The Big Bopper"

Shown above is the gravestone of "The Big Bopper" in an episode of the simpsons. Photo used from https://simpsonswiki.com

Pictured above is a photo of a memorial for the three legendary musicians.

Jiles Perry Richardson Jr., also recognized as J.P. Richardson and “The Big Bopper,” was born on October 24, 1930 in Sabine Pass, Texas. Richardson was known for songwriting, singer, musician, and disc jockey. He had attended Lamar College where he studied pre-law and was a member of band and chorus. Richardson had worked part time at a radio station but eventually started to work full time and dropped out of college.

Richardson was suffering from the flu when he was performing one night. He was on tour at the time and was complaining that the bus would be too cold and uncomfortable for him, so Waylon Jennings gave up his seat on the plane. When the plane crashed, Richardson was whipped 100 feet away from the crash site and had died upon contact.

Not long after the crash, Tommy Dee, a singer/songwriter, wrote a song called “Three Stars” recognizing all three of the musicians. Richardson has also been recognized in some other songs and TV shows such as “The Simpsons.” In 2010, Richardson was recognized into the Iowa Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame. He was also inducted into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame.

Celebrating Chinese New Year

By Sam Frantz, Copy and News Editor ~ February 1, 2021

Chinese New Year (also known as Lunar New Year) begins on the day of the new moon, around the date of January 21st to February 20th. Each year is represented by one of twelve animals from the Chinese zodiac, this year being that of the Ox. According to tradition, people born under the same zodiac have similar traits and personalities. This holiday lasts fifteen days, and this year it is starting on February 12th, 2021. Normally, the people of China will get seven days off school and work to enjoy the celebration.

Legends in the Chinese culture say that this celebration was first done to scare away a monster that would attack people at the beginning of the new year. But, this monster was afraid of loud noises, like fireworks, as well as bright colors like red. The holiday is said to bring good luck for the new year.

There are many traditions that come along with Chinese New Year. The most well known is the big celebration with fireworks and red decorations. People will dress as dragons and parade the streets as a symbol of good luck. Young children and teenagers will receive special red envelopes that hold money. People also clean their houses thoroughly to get rid of any bad luck that may be present. The last event held during Chinese New Year is a lantern festival. People will hang glowing lanterns in temples or carry them during the festivities.

The Chinese New Year is also a time for the whole family to come together and celebrate. Families usually have dinner all together, which is said to be the most important meal of the whole year. There are a couple select foods that most families eat together. Fish, which represents prosperity, chinese dumplings, which represents wealth, and rice cakes, which represents a higher income.

In all, Chinese New Year is a very important celebration in the Chinese culture. Many people across the world will come together to celebrate this holiday. The Chinese New Year really is a unique holiday, with its many traditions and festivities. This celebration is said to bring luck to all, and this year, I think we need that luck more than ever.

Groundhog Day

By Laci Lanzendorfer, Reporter ~ December 20, 2020

The first Groundhog Day was on February 2, 1887, in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. This tradition originated in Europe as “Candlemas Day.” According to tradition, if a groundhog comes out of its hole and sees its shadow, it means six more weeks of winter. If the groundhog comes out of the hole and doesn't see its shadow, it means an early spring. The groundhog was named after Bill Deeley and is magically 134 years old. Punxsutawney Phil, who lives at the Punxsutawney Library, is taken to Gobbler Knob and placed in a heated burrow underneath a simulated tree stump on the stage near where hundreds have gathered each year. For 2021, due to Covid-19, the Groundhog Day Celebration will be held virtually, and the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club website provides details. Visit https://www.groundhog.org/ to find out more. Groundhog Day usually brings back some fun memories from elementary school for NCHS students--especially when groundhog cookies were given out to celebrate this unique day.

New Year and New Beginnings

By Isabelle Smith, Features Editor~ January 7, 2021

I think I can speak for everyone when I say the only wish we have for 2021 is for it to be nothing like 2020. With this in mind, there are many things to look forward to in the new year...brand new inventions, exciting missions, and exhilarating experiences. With the pandemic challenges of 2020, everyone is craving some positives that are going to happen in 2021. Read on for an exciting list of what to look forward to in this new year.

NASA’s Rover Landing on Mars

NASA has been working approximately 28 years on a new rover to send to Mars. It took NASA 20 years to finalize the idea and plan of how the rover would function, and to critique the plans in any way. Then it took about 8 years for the rover to be actually built and tested. On July 30, 2020, NASA decided that it was time to finally launch the rover into space from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

Hugs For Everyone!

Let’s just say Covid has turned everyone’s lives upside down, especially with people who like to travel or people who have to travel to see family. There could also be situations where people couldn’t travel because of Covid regulations. Well, 2021 might have something in store for all of us.

Recently, Federal Health authorities have said that in April of 2021, the COVID-19 vaccine may become public to anyone who would like to receive it. With this new vaccine coming out, it will make traveling easier and safer for everyone.

There have also been health experts reporting that if 50%-70% of the population receives the vaccine and depending on how the pandemic situation changes, there is a good chance that masks will no longer be needed by the end of 2021. So yes, hugging may become a safer and regular thing now in 2021!

It was predicted that the rover would take about 6.5-7 months to land on Mars. The predicted date of the landing is to be on February 18, 2021 but could quickly change. The mission for the new drone is to observe the geology of Mars and to collect rock and soil samples to bring back to Earth to be further tested and observed. It will also use a microphone to record sounds on Mars for the first time and it will also search for signs of life on Mars. This is the fifth rover to be sent to the red planet, but it is the most complex one.

So if you are interested in seeing if the rover will successfully land on Mars and new things it will discover, set the date of February 18, 2021 on your calendars because this will be an interesting mission.

Home Drone Delivering

The year 2021 has so much in store for us this year including home drone delivering. Although the idea of home drone delivery had started in late 2019, COVID-19 has pushed businesses to hurry the process some so businesses can be more productive with home drone delivering. With the way things have been with COVID-19, home drone delivering could help people social distance and not come in contact with anyone except a drone. Drones are small aerial aircrafts that are remotely controlled. Amazon, Walmart, and UPS had finally gotten the new rules with “unmanned aircraft” from the Federal Aviation Administration. So now with these new rules hopefully businesses will be able to start home drone delivery that could arrive at our homes in about 30 minutes to an hour. There is not a set date of when this is to become available to the public, but it's to be predicted sometime in 2021.

Inspiring Words For Motivation

By Isabelle Smith, Features Editor~January 7, 2021

When we think of the tragedies that are happening in the world today we might need a little inspiration and motivation. Just a couple words said to a person can change them and make their day even better. Here are a few quotes that can help everyone through difficult times and can inspire some people to take advantage of the good moments.

"Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment, until it becomes a memory” ~Dr. Seuss “

This quote can change a lot of people. It makes us realize we need to take advantage of all of the moments that are happening now in life, to slow down and make every second matter. In the future, these moments will be memories that we can relive in our minds only. Looking back at each day we live, we will see and appreciate the value of our experiences.

“We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars”~Oscar Wilde

In the times that we are in now, this quote could really help inspire some people. The meaning behind this intriguing quote is that many people are going through rough times, but some are staying positive. This relates to everyone's lives right now due to the fact that COVID-19 has put everyone in a tough spot, but people just have to stay positive through these risky times.

“If you’ve never failed, you’ve never tried anything new”~Albert Einstein

The meaning of this quote is that if we try anything new and fail at our attempts, that is okay because then we can at least say we have given it a try. We cannot live our lives without a risk of failing, since that’s how we truly learn---by trying our best and by sometimes going out of our comfort zone. This way of living opens our minds to new, positive opportunities and gives us confidence in our efforts. This quote can also help everyone with what has been going on in the world. The pandemic has changed life as we know it, and people are experiencing new things, all doing their best to succeed in this new era.

“When you focus on the good, the good gets better”~Abraham Hicks

This inspiring quote has one very strong meaning. It’s telling us that when we look at the good things in life, even in the midst of what we are going through right now, the positive will eventually outweigh the negative. So, keep thinking with optimism. The more we smile and look for goodness, the more we will see it.

“An obstacle is often a stepping stone”~ William Prescott

This is a very unique quote seeing as it is comparing an object to another object, yet many people can relate to the meaning behind the quote. It means that when people are faced with an obstacle in life, they often try to find a way around it instead of trying to face the obstacle. If we face an obstacle or problem, we have to try to think of a new solution that will work to fix the problem. The new solution will get us further in life when we show that we can fix our own problems. And the new solution can also help us later in life.

Fresh Perspective on Being Freshmen

By: Kenzie Formeck - December 1st, 2020

Do you remember when you were a freshman and you were the youngest in the high school? You were at the bottom of the pyramid, some would say. Well, I do, so I decided I wanted to hear from some of NC’s current freshmen. I interviewed four different freshmen, and I asked them up to four different questions.

My first question for all of them was the following: “How is your freshman year going?” Reese Myers responded, “Not too bad, but it’s not as great as I thought it would be, with COVID always switching from hybrid and actual school.”

Another freshman, Mikey Konitsky, like Reese, said,“it would be better without COVID. Also, meeting new teachers made me nervous, but they are all very nice.”

I then asked ninth grader Caden McConnell, and he responded with “Pretty boring and easy. I was scared at the beginning that I would get bombarded with work, but everything has been slow.” Brooke Farrell, freshman, said “I was excited to start high school, but I was disappointed due to the pandemic. It's going well, I’m just not getting the full high school experience.”

The second question I had asked was “Is high school what you expected?” Mikey had said, “It is what I expected, I just throughout COVID would have been over by now.” Caden answered with “I expected it to be harder and more precise than other grades. I probably feel this way because of COVID-19.”

My third question during this interview was “Are you ready for the next 3 years?’ Reese told me “Sort of, I don’t think it will be as great as everyone makes it out to be.” This was the last question I had asked Mikey and Caden. However, for this question, Mikey and Caden had two completely different answers. Mikey had said, “Absolutely not, I am not ready to pick out a career or go to college.” Caden said, “Yes, I know what I’m going to try and do in the future I just have to plan my classes around it.”

My last question for Reese and Brooke was “Do you think high school and middle school are different, if so how?” They both had similar responses to this question. Reese had said, “Very, at the high school you get treated more maturely than at the middle school and they have better classes up here.” Brooke had responded with “Very different, High school you get more freedom, you get treated like an adult, but you have more responsibilities.”

Video Games That Cured Quarantine Boredom

Video Games That Cured Quarantine Boredom

By Sam Frantz

With the unexpected outbreak of COVID-19, most people were quarantined in their homes for a couple months. During this time, people have looked for things to do to occupy their time. Some people have deep cleaned their houses and others have taught their pets some crazy tricks. Even though we are not in quarantine anymore, most schools have turned to online learning. This still gives students more free time than they normally would have. To use time in their homes, many people turned to video games as a form of entertainment and joy. A survey done in March 2020 showed that in the United States, people spent an average of 45% more time playing video games while in quarantine. These are some video games that became immensely popular and cured a lot of people’s boredom during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Minecraft

Minecraft is a game developed by Mojang Studios where players can build, survive, and explore the world around you. The game was released in 2011 and has come a long way since then. Even though the game was released a few years ago, it is one of the most popular games in the world. In 2019, about one year ago, Minecraft had 90 million monthly users. In May of 2020, Minecraft had approximately 126 million monthly users. The game already had an incredible amount of numbers, but the COVID-19 shutdown has caused the number to increase significantly.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a life simulation game developed by Nintendo. The game’s town is inhabited by adorable animal villagers with whom users can interact with. Animal Crossing is designed to be a relaxing game helping you escape from reality. That’s exactly why it became so popular during the COVID-19 shutdown. People were rushing to stores to buy a Nintendo Switch, the only console on which Animal Crossing: New Horizons can be played. The game became incredibly popular as it helped people forget what was going on in the world around them. It sold five million digital copies, more than any other other video game has done before. It also has about 11 million monthly users. The Animal Crossing franchise has been around for about 20 years, but with the surge of COVID-19, it has become one of the most popular games of 2020.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a popular first-person shooter that has many installments. It was developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision. There are currently 24 Call of Duty games in total with Modern Warfare/Warzone being the most recent one. On the first day of its release in March 2020, Call of Duty: Warzone (a version of Modern Warfare) hit 6 million players. In five months, this number quickly grew to 75 million players. Again, like many other games, this was partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Among Us

Among Us is an online multiplayer murder mystery game developed and published by InnerSloth. The game was originally released in 2018, but only recently started getting popular in 2020. This is an easy game to play online with friends, so it was perfect for people in quarantine. In 2019, Among Us had less than 1,000 players. The game has recently hit 3.8 million concurrent players. This is a huge feat considering the game is only available on mobile and PC. With all the new popularity surrounding the game, InnerSloth has announced that they will be adding an update to the game. This news has surprised and delighted Among Us players everywhere.

Conclusion

These were some of the most popular video games of 2020. Whether they’re new or old, these games have become some of the most played games during the COVID-19 pandemic. The game may be calm and relaxing or fast and action packed, but they have kept people of all ages free from boredom while trapped in their homes during a challenging time. They have hit groundbreaking numbers and broken different records in the gaming world. Who knows what the next big video game will be and what records it will break!
