Educating Everyone about Email Etiquette

Ed Long ~ Writer~ March 19, 2021

In our modern world we are sending so many emails. It's crazy! But I would like to take some time out of the day to educate you on the etiquette to use for emails. I think that this will help you and your teachers.

Now, every email should start with a great subject line because the subject tells whomever you are sending it to what you are going to talk about. The subject should have the main point of your email, a quick easy statement.

When starting your email you should say hello or a more formal greeting is dear Mr. or Ms. This shows that you are professional, and people are more likely to answer an formal email because it shows that you care about the topic.

Next, please don't use abbreviations like u instead of you. Instead of lol say “that is very funny” and don't use capital letters like HI THERE because it is very disrespectful to type like that. You should also use correct punctuation and proper grammar.

When you start introducing the topic, try not to get off topic and don't let it go on forever because no one likes a long no-nonsense email (trust me). It is just not fun. If you are writing a really important email, see if you can actually call or see them. Respond quickly so they aren't left in the dark. The opposite though is also not good. You don't want a very small email because sometimes people will see an extra brief piece as one not worth reading.

Now to end an email it would be nice for you to thank the person for taking there time out of there busy day to read your email. The way to do it is thank you Mr. or Ms. ___ for taking the time out of your day to read this and have a wonderful day.

Did You Know?

Over 3O6.4 billion emails were sent and received each day around the world in 2020!

That's crazy!

That number is supposed to increase to over 376 billion by 2025.

Black History Month Celebration Honors Figures from Past and Gives Hope

By Logan Weymer, Staff Reporter ~ Feb. 2021

Black History Month is for all people to celebrate. In fact, I'd like to believe that this month’s recognition shows hope and the great possibility to bring positive change.

Black History Month has been around since 1926, originally being a week to celebrate Abraham Lincoln and Fredrick Douglass's birthday and about their symbolic rules for change for a people who were historically judged. Then, it was inevitably beginning to be celebrated as a month in the mid 1960s at the height of the civil rights movement. Carter G. Woodson, the founder, believed black history should forever be taught in schools and elsewhere, not just for a week. His contribution was meant to appreciate those who stood up against racism and revolted for reform against unfair principles.

Malcolm X

One individual who wasn't afraid to take action against those oppressing his people was Malcolm X. Malcolm was born in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1925. He was born into a large family and had 10 siblings. His father was a priest and was often harassed by a copycat of the KKK, the Black Legion. Growing up, Malcolm watched the actions of racism tear apart his family.

He eventually moved to New York and became involved in crime, and he eventually was caught breaking and entering, stealing things with a group of criminals. He was sentenced to nearly 10 years in prison for his actions. When he entered prison, he was unable to write, read, or spell. He learned to read and write by copying the entire dictionary. He believed in order to get somewhere in this world one must have knowledge, and to him, knowledge was power. While in this prison, his brother, Wilfred, introduced the nation of Islam to Malcolm, and this deeply changed Malcolm.

Malcolm became a speaker and shared his beliefs with many people and followers. At some point, a fire sabotaged Malcolm's home with him, his wife, and his children all sleeping. He was unsure who caused this, but he knew someone wanted him dead. A week later, despite his friends who were fearful and encouraging him to not speak, Malcolm gave what would be his last speech. Malcolm always felt he would be murdered, but his mission to his people was all he ever wanted. His people came first, even over his own life.

Martin Luther and Coretta Scott King

Everyone speaks of Martin Luther King but often forgets to recognize his wife. Coretta Scott King who was born in Marion, Alabama in 1927. She married Martin in 1953 and became involved in activism alongside him. She was involved with the Montgomery bus boycott in 1955 and the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Following her husband’s death, she founded the King Center in Atlanta, which focused on change without violence. Coretta worked as a public mediator and as a liaison to peace organizations, and her goal was always peace and equality. She raised the question: why there weren’t more women activists in the movements? In doing so, she influenced many to join.

During the Vietnam War, she openly expressed her feelings, which caused her to be placed under FBI surveillance for a few years. Not only was she involved in the African American Community, but in the women’s rights movement as well. She spread awareness about social indifferences in the USA and abroad, receiving the award of Universal Love.

Coretta made changes in the world. She participated in events that threatened her livelihood and her children as well. People don’t always take kindly to changes, and she refused to let her influences be disputed. She allowed her husband’s legacy to live on, although it would’ve regardless, but she gave it an extra spark that reminded people that even though someone’s gone, doesn’t mean the light is. Sadly, her life was cut short in 2006 due to ovarian cancer and cerebral vascular disease. Their children live out their long established family name.

Changes are hard to come by but not impossible. These people, this month, all resemble hope. They brought change in ways we may never find anymore. They will forever be remembered and will always have a place in our history. We are people, not stones.

Putting off Procrastination

By Sam Frantz, Copy and News Editor ~ January 5, 2021

Over the past year, many of us have been stuck in our homes trying to learn how to work remotely. But, as I’m sure everyone knows, there are so many things distracting us from working at home. Why do school work when we can play video games or grab a snack from the kitchen? In 2017, a survey done by Brandon Gaille shows that 85% to 95% of students have problems associated with procrastination. Procrastination has always been a problem for people to deal with even before the start of the pandemic, but with lots of people working at home, it has only gotten worse. So, what exactly is procrastination and what can we do to stop it?

What is procrastination?

To learn how to beat the habits of procrastination, first we need to know just what procrastination is. The word procrastination comes from the Latin word “procrastinare,” which means “to put off until tomorrow.” According to the online Oxford Learner’s Dictionary, procrastination is “the act of delaying something that you should do, usually because you do not want to do it.”

Why do we procrastinate?

Some people may think that procrastination has something to do with poor time management, but it’s more of an emotion regulator. Essentially, the reason we procrastinate is because we want to avoid the negative feelings that come with doing a certain task. It’s our brain’s way of coping with unwanted emotions and moods. The feelings presented with the task at hand determine whether our brains will want to avoid it. Usually tasks that we procrastinate on give off negative feelings or emotions, such as anxiety, insecurity, doubt, anger, boredom, and many more. But the longer we wait to do the task, the increase of negative emotions becomes much worse. This can, in a way, be beneficial to some people if they work better under pressure. But for most others, this can be very stressful and detrimental not only to themselves, but to their job or grades as well. The reason procrastination is so addicting is because of the short amount of relief we feel. Our brain almost thinks of this as a reward, so it wants to keep procrastinating to have that feeling of relief. Over time, procrastination can really start to have an impact on our mental and physical health. It can even start to cause symptoms of multiple mental illnesses. It seems very ironic that we procrastinate to get away from negative emotions, only to end up with an even more intense version of the same unwanted emotion.

How do we beat procrastination?

To overcome the habit of procrastination we must recognize that procrastination is about how we deal with emotions. One good way to break this cycle is by using a reward system. As I said before, our brains procrastinate because the feeling of relief that we receive is seen as a reward. To do this, we need to find a different way to reward ourselves that doesn’t have to do with avoiding the task. A good example of this is to work for about thirty minutes and when that time is up, reward yourself with something like a tasty snack or scrolling through your phone for a couple of minutes. Your brain will realize that it is being rewarded greatly for working on a stressful task. The more you repeat this process, the easier it will be to get work done and stop the habit of procrastination. Another tactic you can try is actually forgiving yourself for procrastinating. Getting mad at yourself for procrastinating is actually worsening the negative feelings that your brain is trying to avoid. Instead, we should tell ourselves that it’s all right to make mistakes, but next time there will be no procrastinating. One of the main things that can cause procrastination is distraction. So, it is best to try to limit as many distractions as possible. Some common distractions you can fix are--putting your phone on silent, cleaning the area that you are working in, and closing all other tabs if working on a computer. Of course, if these methods don’t help break the habit of procrastination, there are many other things that you can try. Everybody’s brains are different, especially when it comes to procrastination.

The Show Must Go On

By Brady Myers, Reporter~November 2020

2020--It has been quite the year, and as it draws to an end, two things don't--memories and movies. Since COVID has had us all locked down, for the most part, movies have been a great way to see the rest of the outside. As much as we need movies for entertainment, they need us for the viewership, and these were, and are, the top movies of 2020.

1

An American Pickle

Comedy

This movie stars Seth Rogen, who is known for being an amazing comedian, and in a movie titled “An American Pickle," so you can already expect a few laughs.

After being preserved in a pickle brine for one hundred years, Seth wakes up in a future New York City, destined to track down his great-grandson.

-Rated PG-13 for language and rude humor.

2

Ava

Action, Starring Jessica Chastain, John Malkovich

When you hear action movies you probably think of superhero movies like the Avengers. If you enjoyed those movies I’m fairly certain you’ll enjoy Ava as well.

An assassin gets marked for death by her own Black Ops Organization after questioning their ways. It brings all the action movie you’d expect from an action movie and more, as well as an intriguing storyline to keep your eyes glued.

-Rated R for intense action and death.

3

Possessor Uncut

Horror, Starring Christopher Abbot, Andrea Riseborough

We certainly do not have a lack of horror movies being made, as they are some of the most made and saturated genres. So when a good horror movie comes out that most people find chilling at the least, it becomes very eye-catching. This is one of those films, although it is gruesome.

Taysa Vos takes control of other people to assassinate persons of interest, which on the surface sounds pretty bland, but Brandon Cronenberg adds his own hint of horror which really makes it a great movie to watch.

-Rated R: caution: this one is gory.

Polar Bears:

On Their Way to Extinction

By: Aleah Westrick

As days upon days slowly drift by in Alaska, the ice in the water begins to separate and melt away. Why does it matter that the ice is melting? The polar bears. Scientists actually believe that by the end of this century polar bears will be extinct. As of right now polar bears are numbered out to 22,000 - 31,000. The worst part about it is that we honestly can’t do anything to stop the ice from melting, which causes the polar bears to lose their homes. Not only does it make them lose their homes, but it will then be so difficult for them to eat because they use the ice to their advantage to catch certain prey. So now they are homeless and starving.

“While the bears can fast for months, their survival depends on how much energy they've managed to reserve through eating ahead of time, the energy they expend during the fast and how long a fasting period lasts”, the study said. This shows that with time they will most likely die off and that makes me wonder if this world is going to continue to get worse, what animal is next? I have a feeling humans will go extinct before the sun decides that it produced enough light and will burn out.

Beauty of the Hunt

As hunting season starts, hunters are getting excited about going out into their tree stands or out into fields with their bows or rifles. A game of cat and mouse, hunting is a primal experience. While hunting can be considered a blood sport, it is also one of beauty. Its beauty lies not in the kill, but in the emotions and challenges that lead up to it.

The sport of hunting provides an opportunity to appreciate the outdoors, its beauty and ruggedness, a chance to enjoy and experience nature. For some, it is a bonding experience for family and friends. Through hunting, my dad and I have bonded a lot. It gives us a chance to spend time together for a whole day. One of the biggest thrills of hunting is the challenge of outwitting the prey, the art of keeping your presence unknown. Any experienced hunter will know that one must stay alert, stay downwind of your prey, always speak with a dulled voice, for the wind will carry your voice far. Also, you must remember, to change the direction of your track from time to time, because the wind can suddenly change its direction. Hunting is an exciting way to be outdoors and to see new places, it’s a chance to take in the beauty of nature.

The hunt can be a great teacher of much more than just the techniques of killing. To some, hunting is violent. The killing of nature's creatures, a blood sport. From its primal beginnings, it was done for survival. Today, however, many people like me enjoy hunting for the opportunity it gives us to appreciate nature, to enjoy the challenges and emotions that accompany it. To me and other hunters, these things are the beauty of the hunt.
