Back to Back state champions take on COVID

By Arla Homady and Laci Lanzendorfer

As COVID-19 continues to run rampant, the Northern Cambria Colts Volleyball Team prepares for another state championship title. Seniors and coach, Mr. Hogan, are at a loss of fun aspects of the season due to the PIAA guidelines and regulations about attendance for games and team size. Here is what head coach Mike Hogan had to say about these changes. "Covid has definitely affected the season in terms of not having fans, and not having any parents at all. It was super crazy at the beginning with only being allowed to have 9 players in there and the other girls had to wait in the locker room, that was really a big change. It really made it awkward. We kind of went through that as a team, it was a challenge. We did our best to follow the guidelines (and) now it seems a little better that we got two tickets to have parents in the gym. I know they are saying now that the entire team is allowed in the gymnasium, which I think is a very very important aspect." There is a constant fear and worry that we will not be able to play another game- Governor Tom Wolf could end the season at any point for the girls. What does this mean for the district title and state championship? *another quote from Mr Hogan

With a few fans the girls volleyball team is still striving for another state championship. The fans show as much support as they can for the games. Parents have been getting the chance to be supportive of their kids and go to games. The girls get two tickets for every game so your chance of getting in is slim. This is a huge change for the girls considering how used they are to the loud and supportive student section that they formally had at the games. "I miss the student section, It was always such a pump up during our games. Makes me miss the way things used to be." Senior Emma Kolar had to say about the loss of a student section and fans.

Everyone on the team and in Northern Cambria is praying for the girls and rooting them on through the live streams of the games. Although watching only a stream of the game isn’t ideal, die hard fans are at home on their couch with popcorn at hand to watch the girls have another winning season. COVID may have taken away many memorable moments for the girls, but it didn’t take away the girls drive for another successful season. They are working hard and we wish the best of luck for the remainder of the season!
