Northern Cambria High School ~ Home of the Colts
This year the cheerleading squad was taken under a new direction in leadership. Coach Karin Vasil and Assistant Coach Kim McCracken decided to make cheerleading what it used to be. To start the season off new dances and cheers were taught and to be practiced at home. Practices run differently each week depending on game day and how much practice we need. Karin Vasil was also once a cheerleader here at Northern Cambria High School.
Needless to say, our school needed growth in the team and having a good coach is always a good start. Every girl on this squad is treated with respect and is given critiques by their coaches and captains. This year's captains are juniors Brynn Sheredy and Makaila Work. Everyone works together and communicates with one another to give the team a strong bond. This year's team is mostly made up of freshmen and sophomores in addition to two juniors and no seniors. These changes made by the coaches are a good thing for NC. These past two years have been very difficult for the cheer squad due to the lack of girls, or girls just joining for the name and quitting later on in the season. This year's approach is making team members proud to be a Colt Cheerleader.
Does it feel different to be part of the game now other than just being a spectator?
Yes, it does feel different. It makes me feel more involved with the school and the game. It's more fun than watching the game because we are cheering on the boys.
Do you enjoy being part of the squad?
Yes, I do enjoy being a part of the cheer team. All of the girls are very fun to cheer with.
Advice for Underclassmen
My advice for underclassmen is to never take anything for granted. Before you know it it'll be your senior year and your last time cheering so enjoy these next couple of years.
How has your second year of high school cheerleading been?
It's been pretty good. It's a bummer that more people can't be in the stadium and that we can't march down though.
Do you enjoy being part of the squad?
Yes, of course. It gives me a way to be closer with some of the other girls and make more high school memories.
