Slinky
Ferris Wheel
Movie Theater
Gas Station
Bifocal Glasses
Most people .know about Benjamin Franklin and his many accomplishments, inventions and overall ideas. But did you know about the many more inventions that were made by multiple creative inventors from Pennsylvania!
Slinky
For instance, you probably didn’t know that the Slinky was made by Richard T. James and Helen Herrick Malsed here in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania! Richard T. James was a Naval Engineer. In 1943 he was trying to develop a means for suspending sensitive shipboard instruments aboard naval vessels.. He invented a spring toy named the Slinky. They got the name from his wife Betty James.
Ferris Wheel
The Ferris Wheel was also made in Pennsylvania. This invention was made by George Washington Gale Ferris Jr. The story behind the Ferris Wheel, however, is a very comedic story. It was made in an attempt to ‘’Out-Eiffel’’ The Eiffel Tower, that was made by Stephen Sauvestrae, Maruice Koechilin, and Emile Nouguier. Washington made his living by the railroad industry. He had made the blueprints in Pennsylvania and later shipped them off to be manufactured, with the idea of sending the Ferris Wheel to Chicago’s 1893 World Fair.
Movie Theaters
Did you know that Movie Theaters also originated in Pennsylvania? That's right! In 1905, motion pictures were still a relatively new concept. When Harry Davis and John P. Harris opened the very first movie theater in Pittsburgh shortly after motion pictures, they made entertainment history. The movie theater was called ‘’Nickelodeon.’’ The movie theater soon turned into a huge company on pretty much anything cinematic, and is still around to this day.
Gas Station
S.F. Bowser made the gas pump in 1885. Two decades later, the first gas station was made. Shortly after the Movie Theaters were flourishing, so was the invention of Gas Stations. In 1913, Pittsburgh saw the first Gas Station in the whole world. Even though automobiles weren’t a very common thing to see, Pittsburgh was ready for the high demand in the gas field.
Bifocal Glasses
One of Benjamin Franklin’s inventions was the Bifocal Glasses. The bifocal glasses was a pair of glasses that combined different thickness of lens, which would allow people with vision problems two different lens powers to choose from. “ Bifocals are eyeglasses with an upper and lower half, the upper for distance, and the lower for reading. Bifocals are commonly prescribed to people with presbyopia, a condition that I suffered.” Benjamin Franklin wrote.
Celebrated on March 8 every year, is International Women’s Day. This is a day dedicated to honoring and celebrating the achievements of women throughout history and all across the globe. It also focuses on raising awareness for equality and fundraise for female-focused charities. It is a day that invites people of all different backgrounds, ages, and genders to consider what they can do to make the world a more equal place for everyone.
In 1908, fifteen thousand women marched through the streets of New York protesting the terrible working conditions. They wanted better working hours, better pay, and voting rights. The following year, the Socialist Party of America announced a National Women’s Day in honor of these strikers. In 1910, the event went global. The Socialist International voted to create a day dedicated to speaking out about women’s suffrage. The first International Women’s Day was held in 1911. In Europe alone, over one million people went to the rallies. During the 20th century, the day was acknowledged and celebrated at the grassroots level. It wasn’t until 1975 - International Women’s Year - that the United Nations finally adopted March 8 as International Women’s Day.
Each year has one or two themes chosen. This year, one of the themes is ‘choose to challenge’. With this theme, they want people to challenge inequality, call out bias, question stereotypes, and help create an inclusive world. The other theme that has been selected is ‘Women in Leadership: Achieving an Equal Future in a COVID-19 World’.
The event also has select colors to support it. The Women’s Social and Political Union in the United Kingdom started using white, purple, and green to symbolize women’s equality as early as 1908. The color purple, historically, signified justice and dignity. The color green represents hope. Today, purple is the color of International Women’s Day combined with green to represent the feminist movement.
The event provides an opportunity to fundraise for female-focused charities. The money that is fundraised will be donated to a registered charity or nonprofit that works for the advancement of women and girls. Going with the theme of “choosing to challenge”, this year’s charities of choice include the following:
World Association of Girl Guides & Girl Scouts
This is the largest international youth movement dedicated to girls and young women. Supporting over 10 million girls across 150 countries, it is an IWD charity of choice since 2007.
Catalyst is a global nonprofit that works with over 800 companies around the world to build workplaces that work for women. It has been a charity of choice since 2017.
Equality Now is a program to create a just world where women and girls have the same rights as men and boys by tackling difficult issues, challenging ingrained cultural assumptions, calling out inequality, and using the power of the law to create enduring equality.
This program empowers women across the globe to achieve economic independence via a network of support, professional attire, and tools to help them thrive in work and life.

Texas and an Ice Surge: A Natural Disaster Leaving Millions Without Heat or Water
Ice storms in Texas, mass power outage, and leadership in Cancun. What is really going on in Texas right now? Two days before this mega-storm hit, Texans were warned of what could be a very dangerous hurricane. Residents stocked up on food and supplies to survive the storm and prepared for the worst. Two million people were left without power and water for 3 days as ice and snow surged through the entire state. At hospitals, workers began collecting rainwater in buckets to have something to drink for their patients. Hospitals were also flooded with people poisoned by carbon monoxide from sleeping in cars. Tragically, 5 people died. University professors began running fundraisers to ensure their students could eat. Families took shelter in local furniture stores after seeing icicles forming from the ceiling.
Many are blaming republican leadership for not preparing local government officials for a storm such as this, and not winterizing homes and businesses in preparation for a disaster like this one. Governor Ted Cruz was seen leaving Texas and going to Cancun the day the power went out. Water pipes across the state burst after the blackout, leaving millions of Texans under a ¨boil all water¨ mandate due to low water pressure.
Even with officials trying to make sense of this disaster, most people are left wondering: why did all of this happen? What was the reason behind this mass blackout in Texas? Here’s the rundown of what really happened that week:
Texas´s power supply relies on natural gas production. After the frigid temperatures, this production was stalled immensely. This time of year, only 7% of the state’s max power comes from the wind. So, a stall in natural gas production is a pretty big deal. The effort of burning mass amounts of fossil fuels causes intense climate change helping the drive of natural disasters such as what happened last week. An important fact to keep in mind is that in the past, Texas has refused to join interstate electrical grids and was against energy regulation. This near-collapse of Texas´s electrical grid can be partially attributed to a decision from 1999 to hand control of the entire state’s electrical delivery system to a market-based system of private generators, transmission companies, and energy retailers. At the time, this was very beneficial in helping Texans choose who they got their power from and lowered monthly electricity rates. With all these companies competing for low-cost rates, weather protection and maintenance did not have very many investments. Mega-storms like this one were not anticipated 22 years ago.
What´s next for Texas? How will this affect future decisions made on power and weather readiness? Texas has plenty of things to do before fully recovering from this disaster. Hundreds of families are suing electrical companies for the ruined homes and lost lives. The cost after the storm for repairs and new electrical grids is upwards of about $20 billion dollars. Hopefully, Texas will recover soon and be more prepared for the next time disaster strikes.
President Biden 's Journey to the White House Began in His Hometown in PA
By Ed Long, Reporter ~ February 11, 2021Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. the 47th President of the United States, was born on November 20, 1942, in a blue-collar working town right here in Pennsylvania. Some Office fans might know this location, of course: the town is called Scranton, near Wilkes-Barre. Before Joe Biden became the President, there had been only one president from Pennsylvania, and his name was James Buchanan.
When Joe was just ten years old, his whole family decided to move from PA to Wilmington, Delaware, because his Dad found a good- paying job as a car salesman. There, young Joe went to the elite preparatory high school, Archmere Academy. Joe was great at sports. Even his coach said that Joe was the best pass receiver he had ever seen. Joe led his team to an undefeated season. Joe graduated from high school, then he moved on to the University of Delaware, where he would major in political science. From then he went to Syracuse to get his law degree.
In 1966, Joe Biden married his sweetheart Nielia Hunter, and they would go on to have three children: Natalie, Hunter, and Beau. Overall, Biden spent 36 years in the U.S. Senate, including eight years as chair of the Judiciary Committee and four years as chair of the Foreign Relations Committee. Some highlights of his career there include being part of the confirmation hearing of U.S. Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas, working to aid and support the state of Delaware, and fighting crime.
Biden had aspirations to move up in politics, and after raising a lot of campaign funds, he made his first presidential bid in 1987. He was only 44. Unfortunately, he lost the 1987 campaign to his opponent, George H. W. Bush. Throughout his career, Biden was known for speaking his mind, and it is said that Biden called Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevic a war criminal to his face during a 1993 visit to Belgrade.
Biden kicked off his second attempt at the White House 20 years later, during the 2008 primary, but dropped out after securing only 1 percent of the delegates in the Iowa Democratic caucuses. However, Barack Obama tapped him to be his running mate after winning the Democratic nomination. In the November 2008 presidential elections, Obama and Biden defeated their Republican opponents, John McCain and Sarah Palin, with 52.9 percent of the popular vote.
Finally, for Joe’s final step of his journey, on April 25, 2019, Biden announced his candidacy in the 2020 Democratic presidential primaries. Most believed that Joe, as a popular former vice president with working knowledge of the political world, had high chances of winning. Initially behind in the race for the Democratic nomination, Biden bounced back with a big win in the South Carolina primary at the end of February.
Biden's final stop: he became the 47th President of the United States on January 20, 2021.
Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090
AMD RX5900XT
Xbox Series X
Play Station 5
The year 2020 has been a tough one overall, but there's no denying that it's been a fantastic one for technology and the gaming industry. From the PS5 to the Xbox Series X, 2020 has witnessed some great advances and new products.
With the PS5 and the Xbox Series X, game consoles and their companies made huge strides, but other companies such as Nvidia and AMD have put out impressive products as well. For instance, Nvidia's and AMD’s new graphic cards, the 3080 and the Rx 5800XT must be noted, along with Nvidia`s new flagship GPU the Nvidia GTX GeForce 3090. AMD`s new flagship GPU the 6900XT also has been released and made shockwaves within the tech industry.
Check out the details below on a few of the best tech releases in 2020.
Starting with Nvidia, on September 24th, 2020, the GeForce RTX 3090 was first released. This was one of the first huge releases of the year for Tech. For the tech readers out there who like the details, here they are: the GTX 3090 has a staggering 24 Gb of GX6 memory and is capable of up to 8K HDR gameplay, adding on an incredible 10496 Nvidia Cuda Cores. Along with a boost clock of 1.70 GHz , that makes Nvidia’s 3090 an incredible huge step up in the graphics card industry.
Going on to AMD’s graphics cards, there is the RX6900XT. This card shows 16 Gb of GDDR6 memory, along with a boost clock of up to 2250 MHz. The RX 6900XT, which was released on December 8, 2020, has finally set the bar for AMD graphics cards. As for performance, compared to the 3090 it has very similar performance. Aside from the fine details, comparing them side by side, it would be tough to tell the difference.
Next up is the Xbox Series X. Released on November 10th, 2020 the Xbox Series X quickly sold out as the demand for the console was high. The Xbox has 16 Gb of GDDR6 Memory, and a 1 Tb NVME SSD. The Series X also features true 4K resolution and up to 8K HDR gameplay. This new addition to the Xbox lineup is a great start in the right direction to next gen gaming. Along with the release of a new console, Microsoft has created a new controller to go along with the new Xbox.
Finally we have the Play Station 5. Released on November 12th, 2020, the PS5 is a great step up from the PS4. The PS5 features 4K 120 FPS or 8K at 60 FPS. It also features PS5 exclusives such as Spiderman: Miles Morales. It also features a new controller. This new Dualshock controllers features force feedback. Force feedback allows the controller to push back on the triggers while interacting with certain things in game. This has virtually never been done before and is a huge game change for the PS5.
These are just a few of the main releases for tech this year. Additional new releases from AMD and Nvidia are already being teased.
2020 has been a roller coaster of a year, and by roller coaster I mean a drop with no seatbelt. It goes without saying that most of us are awaiting the end of this year to dawn its curtains, and bring forth 2021, in hopes of being a better year than this one. The bar was set low, and with the end of the Times Square Ball Drop, comes the end of a dark age.
The first ever Times Square Ball Drop took place in 1907, while a party raged on. A ball ascended down a flagpole, ringing in the new year in style. It was made from iron and wood, and was chipped apart as it slid down. It was also illuminated with over a hundred small light bulbs back in the day.
The ball drop took place every year from there on out, except for 1942, and 1943 for unknown reasons. Before the ball drop, people still had traditions for the New Year. Before in the 1900’s they didn’t have any sort of ball drop. Instead they would gather around churches with a giant clock suspended. They’d all chant as the clock ticked to the new year, where we will be going soon. For better or for the worst, let's invite the new year into our own lives.
Every year, California goes through a wildfire season, but this year has been one of the worst. The August Complex fire, which started in August, has burned around 471,185 acres. This is the state’s biggest wildfire ever recorded. The El Dorado wildfire has burnt over 10,000 acres and was ignited when a family used a “pyrotechnic device” for a gender reveal party. Most of the fires are started by people, but some are caused by things like trees falling on power lines.
The burning of so much area has severely polluted the air. In fact, the air quality has plummeted to dangerous levels in California. The debris and ash leftovers from the fires are currently everywhere and can be toxic to humans and animals. This is because it could be burnt up plastic or some other burnt up material from burned down houses.
California’s wildfires are expected to continue to get worse. Up until this year, 2018 was the record worst wildfire year for California with 1,670,000 acres of forest burned. But 2020 has surpassed this record and is still going. In fact, 3,754,729 acres have been burned so far this year and the number is still rising.
Many people are wondering who will become the president of the United States, some are hoping for the Democratic side of Joe Biden, and his VP of choice, Kamala Harris, while others are hoping for another 4 years of Donald Trump and Mike Pence. At the time of writing (10-16-2020), Biden is pulling ahead in a recent poll, with 52% of votes, with Trump slightly behind at 42%. Of course, those numbers can change. As of now, early voting is causing an avalanche, with 17 million votes being cast with most of the votes leaning into the democrats.
Joe Biden is the former Vice President of the United States under Barack Obama, and has served in the US government since 1973, when he was a senator for Delaware. President Trump is a very successful businessman, having multiple casinos, hotels, and clubs all across America. Whenever he was elected president in 2016, the American people believed that he had some great ideas, and that he had the most potential to make America great again.
The first ever debates that I have watched were the debates on September, Tuesday the 29th, and I was really just left with more questions than answers. Will we be wearing masks in 2021? Will protests and racial injustice still be happening? In my opinion, the debate was frustrating; It just felt like watching two men interrupting each other constantly. I was expecting one side to have better ideas than the other, but both sides had good ideas, and bad ideas.
On October 2nd, at about 4 AM, it was announced that President Trump and First Lady, Melania Trump, had tested positive for the Coronavirus, after being in touch with Hope Hicks who is the former communications director of the White House. This will have a heavy affect on the elections. Because of this, the debates will either be very different or completely cancelled. There were worries that Donald Trump gave the virus to Joe Biden, having debated him on September 29th, but Biden's campaign manager confirmed that he tested negative for COVID. Along with the Trumps, many other white house officials have also been confirmed to have contracted the virus, but a spokesman has confirmed that Mike Pence, has tested negative for the virus and is safe.
Many Americans are saying that the election should be postponed, and now that the president has tested positive, a lot more are saying that it should. There are worries that the current system that Americans are using, the mail in voting, can easily be tampered with, and can severely change the course of the election, for either side. The only way for this to happen is for congress to make the law, and the president will have to sign it off.
Mike pence was a lawyer and is serving as the 48th and current vice president of the United States, since 2017. He was the 50th governor of Indiana from 2013 to 2017 and served six terms in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2001 to 2013.
Kamala Harris is an attorney who has served as the junior United States senator from California since 2017. She is the Democratic vice presidential nominee for the 2020 election.
by Ed Long 1-15-21
On January 6th 2021 president Donald Trump held a maga rally in Washington d.c where pro Trump republicans were protesting the results of the 2020 election which nominated Joseph R. Biden the president elect. After the rally a group of hundreds of pro trump republicans went to the capital and protested the election. It was peaceful until they went and busted the windows using flags and stones wrapped around in shirts, basically they used anything to break through the doors of the capitol. The worst part about this is that there was no police action at first; they only had a few guards there. These homegrown terrorists smashed through and started looting the offices of senators and even stole property from Nancy Pelosi. One man stole a letter from Nancy Pelosi, that is a federal crime to take someone else's mail. Next the senators had to put on gas masks because there was tear gas in the rotunda, they had to hide underneath the building because these people were looting and rioting and down right trashing the capitol. Then news broke that one of the rioters shot and killed a young woman named Ashli Babbitt, she was only 35 years old. At 2:45 pm they broke into the senate chambers where the senators would do their business. At 4:00 pm explosives were found at the capitol and the r.n.c (republican national convention) 4:05 president elect Biden said ¨put a stop to this madness¨at 6:00 pm D.C went into a curfew, an hour later twitter puts a twelve hour ban to his account. Then finally everything calmed down at 9:00 pm .The senate certified the votes for president of the united states. . The winner of course was Biden.
