2023
I am currently in my tenth year of teaching, and I am both proud and grateful to share that all ten years have been at Natomas Charter School. My NCS journey began at PFAA, then shifted to PACT Academy for three years where I worked closely with my original NCS mentor, Alicia Carter. Prior to PACT, all I taught for the first 6 years was mathematics. When I moved to PACT, I broadened my teaching duties and overall educational responsibilities. In addition to teaching math workshops, I took on classes like Middle School Humanities and Language Arts, Leadership, Fairy Tale Stem, Board Games, Tumbling, Martial Arts, and Math Support. I also became an Academic Adviser to homeschooling families, and the Math Curriculum Lead. I believe I brought a unique set of skills to support K-8 students at PACT Academy, but also brought back a variety of skills to PFAA when my time at PACT concluded.
In 2022, I made my way back to PFAA to teach math exclusively again. I joined the 6th grade team where we collaborate on a regular basis about supporting both current and incoming 6th graders. I also teach a class of 7th graders, and a mixed 8th/9th class, so I am working closely with other members of the middle school and high school teams as well. In a weird twist of fate, my own middle-school-aged daughter is in one of my math classes this year, which has made this year the most special and unique in all my years of teaching.
Even though I am back to where I started my teaching journey, my new position in the 6th grade team, and taking on our new CPM curriculum, has made the transition back feel invigorating and new. Additionally, I am back at PFAA with fresh perspectives on education that I gained by working on another NCS campus.
2017
I am currently in my fourth year of teaching, both at PFAA and in total years. My journey at the Performing and Fine Arts Academy began in May 2013 when I received a short-term assignment during my credential year. I was assigned to Alicia Carter's class, and within a week of being on site I taught a couple of lessons, received an interview, and was hired as the second PFAA middle school math teacher for the 2013-2014 school year. Prior to working at NCS, I received my teaching credential through UC Davis, and completed my Masters in Math Education at UC Davis during my first year of teaching.
My role as a Natomas Charter employee has evolved over the years. My math classes have included both middle school and high school students. I helped oversee PFAA's and Leading Edge's transition from the traditional math course pathway (Pre-Algebra, Algebra, and Geometry) to an integrated model. Finally, I have transitioned from "new teacher" to Department Co-Head.
