I have worked on a variety of professional goals each year to help focus my development as a teacher. At PACT one of my goals was to organize and align the math curriculum at PACT and give advisers guidance when helping families choose curriculum. I researched alignment documents to find resources to that would help PACT advisers and families what to expect in each grade level for math.
At PACT in the Project X program, I used a variety of math resources (including former PFAA McGraw-Hill workbooks) to bridge the gaps between PACT and PFAA that I could identify. I taught Math 7 and 8, but also gathered resources for Math 6 to use as well so we were aligned as a PX middle school math team. A stretch goal of mine would be to continue working with the PACT advisers and teachers to align all 3 of our NCS middle school math practices as much as possible.
As I have transitioned back to PFAA, an ongoing goal in instruction is to get more comfortable implementing the CPM curriculum and blending it with the best teaching practices I have developed and refined after a decade of teaching math. It is crucial to note that I am currently teaching 4 CPM textbooks (Math 6, 7, 8 and Math 1.) CPM places a huge emphasis on explorative and cooperative learning, and content mastery comes second to the learning process. They encourage (and even provide) team tasks and tests so students are exploring new concepts together from start to finish. It has made me rethink how I teach, how I grade, what I expect students to master, when to expect or check for mastery, and how to help students develop a growth mindset and a sense of personal value in a math environment.Â
Blending CPM practices and strategies with resources I have refined over 10 years of teaching math
Connecting content standards to CCSS Standards for Mathematical Practice
Purposeful objectives for math practice and mastery (homework criteria)
K-8 and 6-12 Math Alignment Documents and Training would benefit all campuses
Finding balance between exposure and mastery
Developing WIN sessions to balance math support and enrichment
