Diagnostic Questions:
Is my student's reading effortful?
Does my student understand if I read the passage to them?
Phonemic Awareness refers to the specific ability to focus on and manipulate individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken words.
Phonics is the connection between graphemes (letter symbols) and sounds.
Fluency is defined as the ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression.
Many of the new ELA standards identify a set of skills students must master before they can become fluent readers. These foundational skills include the alphabet, the concept of print, phonological awareness, phonics, high-frequency words, and fluency.
