Train Ride Challenge: Chance to win!
This month, as we continue our adventure, we chug into the focus area of differentiation. When riding on a train there are various options you have as a passenger. You may have purchased a sleeper cabin, chose to spend your time in the dining car, watched out the window in the passenger car, or spent your day lounging in a roomette. Regardless of the way your time was spent, all passengers arrive at the same destination.
This is similar to how differentiation works in the classroom. Each "passenger" in a classroom can spend their time doing different tasks that are just right for him/her, but in the end, we hope that all student arrive at the same destination, which in this case is mastery of the standard(s). Take a ride with us as we explore more about the digital tools that can help us differentiate in the classrooms.
Did you know that you can schedule a Microsoft Teams call in Canvas? Be one step ahead of the game, by viewing THESE instructions, that will help you be prepared for any possible remote learning days due to inclement weather. Winter is just around the corner...are you ready?
While students must learn the North Carolina Standard Course of Study, the path in which they take to master these standards does not have to look the same. Differentiation allows students to learn in a variety of ways and can even provide students with choice over how they can show what they've learned. This month's newsletter will focus on how we can best meet the needs of individual learners, while maintaining a rigorous curriculum.
All Aboard the Differentiation Express! Just as trains have different tracks they can travel with different stops for their passengers, differentiating instruction provides learners with various options and choices of mastering the same objective. We may all travel different paths or tracks to get there but we master the same objective.
In the article "What is Differentiated Instruction?" Carol Ann Tomlinson provides the working definition as, "tailoring instruction to meet individual needs. Whether teachers differentiate content, process, products, or the learning environment, the use of ongoing assessment and flexible grouping makes this a successful approach to instruction. "
Here are a few things to consider as you look at building a lesson that promotes differentiation.

Newsela: Students are able to read the same current events content, but it is differentiated to fit the needs of the specific student.
SlidesMania: Offers engaging choice board templates that can be used for PowerPoint or Google Slides.
GimKit: A game show for the classroom that requires knowledge, collaboration, and strategy to win. Students answer questions on their own device at their own pace. Throughout a kit, each student will get exposure to questions multiple times to ensure mastery.
November focus: We are kind and courageous.
Lessons on this topic will teach students about the effects of digital drama, cyberbullying, and hate speech on both themselves and their larger communities. They will explore the roles people play and how individual actions -- negative and positive, intentional and unintentional -- can affect their peers and their broader communities. They are encouraged to take the active role of upstander and build positive, supportive online communities, and they will learn how to cultivate empathy, compassion, and courage to combat negative interactions online.
Read more about this topic on the Common Sense Education website.
Lessons for all grade levels are available on the Guilford is Cyber Safe website. Family resources in English and Spanish accompany the lessons, with additional languages available on the Common Sense website.
All lessons and activities are designed to be taught in person and should take 15-20 minutes. They are available in Google slide or Nearpod versions. More activities and the full lessons can be accessed on the Common Sense Education website with a free educator account.
A link to the Guilford is Cyber Safe website has been added to Clever. Staff must be logged into their GCS Google account to access the website. Links to Teacher Guides on the Common Sense website do require a free educator account.
