Choose Your Adventure Challenge - Chance to win!
This month we set out to an all-inclusive resort in the tropics. The resort is set up so that all day long we can choose what activity or adventure we want to set out on. We might go snorkeling, take a hot air balloon ride, ride on an ATV, play a round of golf, or swim with the dolphins. The resort, while nice, is not what makes our experience so unique and special. It is the adventures we choose to go on, while staying at the resort, that create lasting memories.
The blended learning models are just like the resort in this instance. The models are far from the most important part of blended learning. This may sound like a bold statement, but it is true. The blended learning models provide the structure and the space for educators to implement all the blended learning practices, successfully. So just like the resort allows for all those amazing adventures, the models allow students the space to engage in meaningful learning. They allow students to "pick their own adventure" or to choose the tasks that will be most beneficial for the standard/s they are working on. The models set the tone, but the tasks provide the true experience.

Blended learning models allow you the flexibility to accomplish the items listed in the four focus areas of the Blended Learning Best Practices document. Implementing personalized practices can be a challenge and these models are the key to overcoming those roadblocks. These models allow for multiple tasks, and even multiple standards, to be worked on at the same time, based on student needs. Visit the "Blended Learning Focus" section below to learn more about these blended learning models and how to implement the one that is right for you.
As we vacation at the All-Inclusive Resort, here are a few things to consider as we choose our own adventure that fits our needs.
In Catlin Tucker's Blog " The Why, How, and What of Blended Learning", she states, “Blended learning” is an umbrella term. Within the umbrella are many different models that give students different degrees of control over time, place, pace, and path. On one end of the spectrum are the rotation models, like the station rotation and flipped classroom models, where the teachers are the drivers of instruction. On the other end of the spectrum are models, like the a la cart and enriched virtual models, that rely heavily on online learning as the driver of instruction and learning happens primarily online.
Here are a few things to consider as you look at which blended learning model fits us best

What Blended Learning Looks Like in the Classroom (station rotation video)
Recording a lesson using the SWIVL and flip your classroom, by having students watch the video at home, first.
Planning and recording small group collaboration, as part of a station rotation, using your SWIVL device. Recordings can then be watched as a way to assess understanding and participation.
Organizing your classroom to match the model (see slide 5).
Use sections or groups in Canvas to create online station rotation
In a time of 24/7 connectivity, do the benefits of online sharing outweigh the risks? Lessons will prompt students to consider how sharing information online can affect them and others and will support them in learning to reflect before they reveal, as well as encourage others to do the same. Students will also learn the pros and cons of having different personae and explore how presenting themselves differently online can affect their sense of self, their reputations, and their relationships. Read more about this topic on the Common Sense Education website.
Lessons for all grade levels are available on the Guilford is Cyber Safe website. Family resources in English and Spanish accompany the lessons, with additional languages available on the Common Sense website.
All lessons and activities are designed to be taught in person and should take 15-20 minutes. They are available in Google slide or Nearpod versions. More activities and the full lessons can be accessed on the Common Sense Education website with a free educator account.
A link to the Guilford is Cyber Safe website is in Clever. Staff must be logged into their GCS Google account to access the website. Links to Teacher Guides on the Common Sense website do require a free educator account.
