Road Trip Challenge: Chance to win!
This month, we continue our adventure, with a road trip into the focus area of ownership/agency. As we begin our drive, we may map out the route, carefully considering what roads we will take. However, rest stops, traffic, road closures, and tourist attractions might cause us to adjust our trip along the way. With ownership/agency students have the ability to customize their learning path, through choice and voice and may make their own changes along the way.
After we get to our final destination on our road trip, we may look back and think "If I were to do it again, I'd...." With ownership/agency students should be encouraged to reflect and evaluate their progress, considering what went well and what would they do differently next time. Rarely on a road trip would one ever follow a straight line from point A to point B. It's the stops, the detours, the change in scenery, and the company that makes the experience truly unique and memorable.
When you login to Nearpod, you have the opportunity to distinguish yourself by becoming a Nearpod Certified Educator. To grow your Nearpod skills, you can access the modules across the top toolbar when you log into your Nearpod account.
When ownership/agency are a part of the class students can be seen setting their own goals during student/teacher conferences. Setting obtainable goals allows students to focus and can help them prioritize their work. In addition, students would have some say as to how they want to learn and how they want to show what they have learned. This choice and voice often keeps students more engaged in the work. Finally, students would also reflect on their learning. Evaluation and reflection receives a .75 effect size in John Hattie's Visible Learning research, showing a high impact on student achievement. Allowing students to reflect on their thinking, what went well, where they may have gone wrong, and what they might do differently, is crucial to students understanding not only what they learned, but how they learned.
Pack your bags as we head on this road trip adventure! Just as we plan road trips and get to decide the best route, restaurant, gas station, and more that fit our needs for the trip, our students need to be able to take ownership of their learning adventure and master the content in the way that best fits their learning style and needs.
In the article "How to Build Student Agency in Your Classroom" Jacob Bruno states "Too often, we create situations where they (students) don't have enough options or choice in how their own educational journeys go, leaving them in learning traffic that doesn't let them move as fast." This is critical when building agency in the classroom. He goes on to state "Agency is partially about having choice, and partially about know what to with that choice." It is critical for students to have the choice and to have the knowledge as to which choice best fits their needs and learning style(s).
Here are a few things to consider as you look at building a classroom environment that promotes Ownership and Agency.
Student Agency: Teaching Students to Take Ownership of Their Learning
Classroom Structures that Promote Student Agency: The Power of Student Joy
Consider...
Using ePortfolios in Canvas for students to display and reflect on submitted work
Using Google forms for students to set goals and reflect on those goals.
Using a digital choice board (created in Google Slides) to give students options on how they learn and/or show what they know: example 1, example 2, example 3
Padlet: An extremely easy-to-use tool that allows learners to collaborate online by posting text, images, links, documents, videos and voice recordings. Teachers can use this as a "parking lot" for students to share their thoughts and ideas before, during, and after instruction.
FlipGrid now Flip: Teachers can create discussion topics and students can respond with video recordings. Their peers can respond to keep the discussion going. This tool helps students formulate their ideas in a pre-recorded setting, which means no one gets talked over or ignored by louder voices.
Khan Academy: Offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. It provides self-paced practice for students to fill in gaps in their understanding and then accelerating their learning.
December Digital Citizenship focus: We know the power of words and actions.
As the line between online and offline continues to blur, students will reflect on how they can use intrapersonal and interpersonal skills to build and strengthen positive online communication and communities. Lessons on this topic will explore common digital stressors and their influences on relationships. Students will also gain an understanding of how to communicate effectively online and how and why some topics and conversations can best lend themselves to certain mediums.
Read more about this topic on the Common Sense Education website.
Lessons for all grade levels are available on the Guilford is Cyber Safe website. Family resources in English and Spanish accompany the lessons, with additional languages available on the Common Sense website.
All lessons and activities are designed to be taught in person and should take 15-20 minutes. They are available in Google slide or Nearpod versions. More activities and the full lessons can be accessed on the Common Sense Education website with a free educator account.
A link to the Guilford is Cyber Safe website has been added to Clever. Staff must be logged into their GCS Google account to access the website. Links to Teacher Guides on the Common Sense website do require a free educator account.
