November Canvas Challenge Winner
December Canvas Challenge: Chance to win!
Blended learning is an approach to education that combines online educational materials and opportunities for interaction online with traditional place-based classroom methods. It requires the physical presence of both teacher and student, with some elements of student control over time, place, path, or place. Remember this is not reinventing the wheel. YOU ARE ALREADY DOING MANY OF THESE COMPONENTS!
Ownership/Agency
Ownership/Agency is the focus area for this month's newsletter. The image, below, is one part of the Blended Learning "Look-For" document. To understand Ownership/Agency, consider this metaphor: In a game of chess, the player strategizes and decides the next move. Ownership/Agency in the classrooms allows for students to decide their next move. What standard do I really need to review? What topic would I like to research? What tech tool could I use to show what I learned? Ownership/agency gives the student a voice. A voice to set goals, a voice on how to achieve those goals, and a voice to reflect on those goals. It shifts the classroom from being teacher-centered to one that is student-centered.
In Catlin Tucker's Blog " 3 Ways to Build Student Agency into Your Lessons", she states, Although many teachers recognize the importance of making students active agents in the classroom, it is easy to overlook student agency when we plan our lessons. However, the ability to make key decisions about their learning is a powerful motivator for students. If they are invited to tailor the learning to their interests, decide how to approach a problem, or determine what they will create, it makes them feel valued as individual learners. It also has the advantage of getting more students to lean into the learning happening in the classroom.
Here are a few things to consider as you look at when planning lessons in your classroom to ensure students take ownership for their own learning.
After July 2022, teachers will no longer be able to create quizzes in Classic Quizzes. Teachers will have to create quizzes after this date in New Quizzes.
However, students will be able to take a quiz that was created in Classic Quizzes before the above date until June 2023.
Our Fall Self-Paced sessions will run from October 18th - January 7th. Click on the links below to register.

Congratulations to Blair Harvey, from Summerfield Elementary, for being selected as the Canvas Challenge winner for the month of November. Ms. Harvey won a $20 gift card to Taco Mama, for submitting a screenshot of a pretest she created on sounds, using Canvas quizzes. This is the first step in creating a Mastery Path, a Canvas feature highlighted in the November newsletter. See below for our December Challenge. The next winner could be you! A special thanks to Taco Mama for their generous donation.
