Upchurch Elementary

A Message from Mrs. Harrahill

Upchurch Community,

It's hard to believe we are already in September and halfway through the first quarter. Your child's mid-quarters grades will be found in Friday folders today for grades 2-5. Please note that there is still time left in the quarter. Please feel free to reach out to your child's teacher if you are seeking additional guidance. Your partnership and continued communication matters.

Please take the time to complete the 2019 Engagement Survey linked below. Your opinion matters. Millard Public Schools seeks to have engaged stakeholders to meet its mission. Strategy 1.2 (2018) calls for a survey to determine engagement of all stakeholders (students, families, staff, and community). Please take 10 minutes to provide us your candid input. Your answers will be anonymous. If you have students in multiple buildings, you will receive this survey link for each building and can provide specific input. The survey window will remain open through September 27th.

We suggest copying and pasting the link below into your browser if you are experiencing difficulties.

Early Literacy- Nebraska Reading Improvement Act

The Nebraska Reading Improvement Act was passed by our legislature and goes into effect this year. The heart of the Act is the early identification of students who need extra reading support so that they receive targeted intervention in addition to high quality reading instruction. Throughout the year, if children demonstrate a need for additional reading support teachers will contact & collaborate with families.

Message from Mrs. Blecha

Upchurch Elementary School Counselor

Dear Parent/Guardian,

This month, our classroom counseling lessons in grades K-5 will focus on skills of resiliency, coping, and how to get help for oneself and/or a friend if needed. These lessons are intended to educate students on feelings of stress, worry, sadness, how to cope with such feelings, and how to ask for help if needed.

Students will identify coping strategies and trusted adults at school and outside of school to whom they can go for help. Any student who has difficulty identifying coping strategies and/or adults who can help will receive a follow up visit with the school counselor or school psychologist to determine if any additional steps are necessary.

Please talk with your child about these feelings, and reinforce appropriate coping strategies such as talking with a trusted adult, exercising, positive self-talk or doing an activity they enjoy. Modeling appropriate reactions to stress and feelings of sadness in your own life and then talking with your child about you handle it in a healthy way can also help to empower your child to make healthy choices.

Please contact Kelly Blecha or Lindsey Harrahill with any questions. Thank you for your continued partnership in helping to ensure your child has a successful school year!

Sincerely,

Kelly Blecha
